For the third consecutive Grand Slam final, No. 1 Jannik Sinner squares off against No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz. The undisputed two best players in tennis will lace them up inside Arthur Ashe Stadium on Sunday in what will undoubtedly be a blockbuster US Open final. As always, the LWOT team offers their roundtable predictions. Zain Mustafa, Andreas Pelekis, Ilemona Onekutu, and Shane Black offer the insights. But who will reign supreme in Flushing, New York?
Head-to-Head: Sinner 9-5 Alcaraz
Zain
Are you starting to get déjà vu yet? For the third consecutive Major, we are getting a SinCaraz final, and this one also decides the World No.1 ranking. The way these two players match up, a close battle always feels inevitable. Carlos Alcaraz is playing some of his best tennis ever on this surface. His kick serve and forehand, with their varied spins, have troubled Jannik Sinner before and could do so again here.
But this is a slick hard court, Jannik Sinner’s surface. He has all the tools and weapons needed to excel on it. And when both players are playing at this level, the respect for Sinner being the best player in the world on hard courts is too much to overlook.
Prediction: Sinner in 4
Andreas
It’s an uphill battle for any player to face off against Jannik Sinner or Carlos Alcaraz nowadays, and it’s now Sinner and Alcaraz’s third consecutive Grand Slam final on Sunday. Sinner is arguably the better player on hard court, having a stunning 27-match win streak on hard courts and winning the last three hard court Grand Slams. Alcaraz, however, may have been the better player this tournament. He’s yet to drop a set, cruised past Novak Djokovic in the semifinals, and may have shown more of his weapons when at his 100% best here, especially looking flawless with his forehand and net play.
Sinner faced some apparent stomach issues during his semifinal win, and dropping two sets along the way to this final could make him more vulnerable. While the Italian could pick apart Alcaraz’s patches of inconsistency, I see the Spaniard bringing his best and snatching a second US Open title — cementing a return to World No. 1 along the way. Expect another thriller.
Prediction: Alcaraz in 5
Ilemona
Alcaraz and Sinner meet again on one of the sport’s biggest stages, and it feels fitting given how their rivalry has grown. Both have looked sharp in New York, with Alcaraz cruising through most of his matches, having dropped his serve just twice across six rounds, and is yet to lose a set, while Sinner has shown his resilience in grinding out tough wins. This will be their third slam final meeting this year, and each knows how to hurt the other in baseline exchanges that often turn into extended battles. Sinner’s run through the hard-court season has been strong, while Alcaraz has also found his best level this summer. It has all the makings of another marathon, and whichever player handles the pressure points better could walk away with the trophy.
Prediction: Sinner in 5
Shane
Both Sinner and Alcaraz have looked unbeatable at the 2025 US Open. They come into this final with supreme confidence, and I would expect both players to bring their A-game. Sinner called for a medical timeout during his semifinal win, and while it did not affect the result of his previous match, it is a bit concerning if he needs to muster four or five hours of court time against Alcaraz. The faster court favors the Italian, but something tells me this goes the way of the Spaniard, ending the Slam count at two for both men this season. Regardless, buckle up.
Prediction: Alcaraz in 5
