Watch: Amanda Anisimova breaks down in tears after reaching Wimbledon quarter-finals

Amanda Anisimova had an emotional reaction after reaching the Wimbledon quarter-finals and securing her debut in the WTA Top 10. The 23-year-old American battled past Czech rising star Linda Noskova (No. 30) in a tense match, winning 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 after coming back from a break down in the final set.

This marks Anisimova’s second Wimbledon quarter-final appearance — the first came in 2022, where she lost to Simona Halep. She will now face Russian veteran Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the next round. After sealing the victory, Anisimova couldn’t hold back tears before walking over to shake hands with her opponent.

“It’s amazing to be back here. Honestly, coming back after last year, playing in qualies, I didn’t expect to be in the quarter-finals again,” said the American. “I’m so excited and proud of myself, and I’m looking forward to another challenge.”

It hasn’t been an easy road back to the top for Anisimova, who showed early promise in her career. At just 17, she made a splash at Indian Wells 2018 by reaching the fourth round — the youngest player to do so since 2005 — and earned her first top-10 win against World No. 9 Petra Kvitova.

In 2019, she won her maiden WTA 250 title at Copa Colsanitas, despite having no prior WTA-level wins on clay. That same year, she reached the French Open semi-finals and climbed to a career-high No. 21 at just 18 years old.

After maintaining a steady presence in the Top 30 for a couple of years as one of the most exciting prospects on Tour, injuries in 2021 led to a significant ranking drop, falling outside the Top 80. Although she rebounded to reach the Top 25 in 2022 and early 2023, Anisimova took a break from tennis due to mental health concerns, staying off the tour from May 2023 to January 2024. She dropped as low as No. 442 in the rankings, but slowly worked her way back up, ending the 2024 season at No. 36.

This year, Anisimova is enjoying a remarkable resurgence. Still only 23, she won her first WTA 1000 title at the Qatar Open earlier in the season and came into Wimbledon with a career-high ranking of World No. 12. Now, with her quarter-final run, she is projected to break into the Top 10 for the first time — reaching No. 8 in the live rankings.
