Watch: 'Do you need a mental break?': Iga Swiatek snaps at journalist after US Open loss

Iga Swiatek had a strong response for one of the journalists at a US Open press conference after being defeated in the quarterfinals by Amanda Anisimova. The 6-time Grand Slam champion was not at all happy with the question she received after her elimination, giving a sarcastic answer to one of the journalists present.

The world No. 2 ended her participation in Flushing Meadows after falling to the American Amanda Anisimova 6-4, 6-3. The Pole's streak of 9 consecutive wins and 18 victories in her last 19 matches came to an end.

Swiatek is one of the players with the most matches so far this season, a result of her deep runs in practically all the tournaments she has played: she has a 53-13 record, winning two titles and reaching at least the semifinals in 8 of the 15 tournaments she has played (in 13 of the 15 tournaments she has at least reached the quarterfinals).

This season at the US Open, she seemed like a strong candidate, as the champion of the recent Wimbledon title—the most recent Grand Slam—and the Cincinnati Open—the most recent WTA 1000 on hard courts. The Pole defeated rivals such as Anna Kalinskaya (29th) and Ekaterina Alexandrova (13th) on her way to the quarterfinals, but she ended up falling to Amanda Anisimova.

The defeat was partly surprising, especially remembering what happened in the Wimbledon final two months ago, where Swiatek won 6-0, 6-0. However, this time she faced an inspired Anisimova, who ended up getting her revenge with a 6-4, 6-3 victory, reaching her first US Open semifinals.

Swiatek snaps at journalist over "Tired" question

Swiatek attended the press conference absolutely serious and showed her annoyance with a journalist when asked about the large number of matches she had played in recent months. During the press conference, Swiatek was asked if she needed a mental break, a question that did not sit well with the 6-time major champion.

Q: Just generally, it's been a lot of tennis the last few weeks: Wimbledon, the American tournaments leading up to this, and now this. How tired are you at the moment?

Swiatek: Well, I don't know. It's not like my matches were exhausting here.

Q: Do you feel like a mental break? I'm not talking about the loss as such.

Swiatek: Why would you say that?

Q: I just wondered. It's just a lot in a row. Do you look forward to a break?

Swiatek: Well, talk to people responsible for the schedule. Do you need a mental break?

Q: Sorry?

Swiatek: You look like you need a mental break.

Q: I do, yeah.

Swiatek: Well, then what are you doing here?

Q: Got to get to the end of the tournament.

Swiatek: Good luck.

Swiatek must wait for world No. 1

Swiatek arrived at the US Open with the ambition of winning a 7th Grand Slam title and also the possibility of regaining the world No. 1 ranking if she won the title and Sabalenka fell before the Round of 16. However, Swiatek's path came to an early end, and Sabalenka remains in the competition, where she is waiting to face Jessica Pegula in the semifinals.

With this, Swiatek will have to wait a little longer if she wants to return to the fight for the top of the rankings. At the moment, she is positioned just over 800 points away from Sabalenka in the WTA Race.

Iga's next challenge will be at the Seoul Open in two weeks, starting her Asian swing early in a WTA 500 tournament, something unusual for the Pole.
