Former World No.1 Naomi Osaka received backlash for not mentioning Victoria Mboko in her trophy presentation speech after losing to the teenage star in the final of the 2025 Canadian Open. However, retired American pro Andy Roddick believes there was no malicious intent in the omission.

Both players shocked the tennis community with their play during the WTA 1000 event, leading to a very unexpected final. However, it was Mboko who emerged victorious as the Canadian rallied from a set down to record a 2-6 6-4 6-1 victory and win her first WTA title in front of home fans.

Osaka appeared visibly frustrated as the match wore on, sending long looks to her camp after losing points. The Japanese superstar appeared to throw in the towel towards the end, as she sent several balls long in an attempt to end the point.

After an awkward handshake at the net, both ladies were given the opportunity to say a few words during the trophy presentation. Osaka kept it very brief, thanking the fans and tournament sponsors. However, she failed to mention her opponent.

Roddick believes Osaka should not be vilified

The two-time US Open's action drew a lot of criticism from fans, as many took to social media to accuse Osaka of being a sore loser. However, Roddick came to Osaka's defense, saying the Japanese superstar may have been caught up in the moment.

"She didn’t really want to expand a lot in the post-match speeches,” said Roddick on the latest episode of his podcast. “I see people are saying ‘she should’ve said…’, I don’t know, we’re the only sport that is forced to talk after we lose. Obviously, we’re not our best selves in that situation, and if people are, great, if they’re not, they’re not.
"I would rather her be friendly with Victoria Mboko all the time than at Grandstand in front of a microphone. I don’t know if either is true, but Naomi [Osaka] is generally well-liked, polite, everyone likes her, and she doesn’t give a lot sometimes when she’s not ready to give a lot, and that’s fine."

Osaka would later release a statement on Threads where she addressed her actions and thanked Mboko. Both athletes have withdrawn from the 2025 Cincinnati Open, as they try to recover in time for the US Open which kicks off at the end of the month.
