Joao Fonseca is quickly becoming one of the most talked-about young players on the ATP Tour.
The Brazilian picked up his first two ATP Tour titles this year and finished the season ranked 24th in the world.
His biggest win came at the Swiss Indoors in October, where he beat Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the final to take the title.
With Alcaraz and Sinner currently holding a firm grip on men’s tennis, there’s plenty of debate around who might be able to break through. The pair have won eight Grand Slam titles between them, so it won’t be easy for anyone to break their hold at the top.
Speaking about Fonseca and his chances of breaking through to challenge Alcaraz and Sinner, Nadal said:
“It’s true that there are players who are doing things that I had never seen before until now. But it’s not only him. Others too.”
Nadal continued: “In terms of pure talent, I think he is one of those players who can do great things.”
Nadal spoke about the need for someone to break up the current dominance of Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner.
In 2024, the two combined for all four majors, with Alcaraz winning eight titles and Sinner taking home six.
During his comments, Nadal brought up Fonseca but said he doesn’t think the Brazilian is ready to challenge either player just yet.
Nadal’s comments were reported by Cadena SER: “I watch some tennis matches, the ones I feel like watching. I think Sinner and Alcaraz need someone to push them… Fonseca? I think he’s still young and not in a position to think about that.
“They need someone to challenge them a bit because they’ve set themselves apart from everyone else, and in any form they can beat anyone until they run into that other player. “Those of us watching from the outside have the feeling that even if they play badly, they’re going to keep winning and reaching all the finals.”
Nadal closed out his playing days with a run at the 2024 Davis Cup Finals, where he helped Spain reach the semi-finals.
During his interview on El Larguero, Nadal was asked if he has any regrets about stepping away from professional tennis. “It’s a closed chapter, and a closed one at that,” Nadal replied.
“I’m convinced my time had come because there was nothing else. This doesn’t mean I won’t have fun playing in an exhibition in the future. “There’s no need to dream about it; it’s a very real possibility that I’ll play with Djokovic or Federer. What we can’t expect is the same level we played at before [laughs]. “If the opportunity arises, we’ll prepare to play at our best.”
Nadal has already returned to the court in recent weeks, joining Alexandra Eala and Alina Korneeva for practice sessions. He also mentioned on Monday that another exhibition with Roger Federer could be on the cards down the line.
