Jannik Sinner has finally managed to defeat Felix Auger-Aliassime at the CIncinnati Open on Thursday as he reached the semi-finals in Ohio. He had lost their previous Head to head encounters winning just one set. But it was a very different story on Thursday as he made light work of the Canadian.
It was a 6-0, 6-2 win for Sinner as he showcased how far he has come since 2022 when they last played. He is now the all conquering tennis force who is currently World No.1 and was recently crowned Wimbledon champion.
Auger-Aliassime on the other hand has had fits and starts since but openly admitted struggling with the heat earlier in the week. Sinner who has yet to drop a set in Cincinnati claimed his quickest win of 2025 in seeing off Daniel Elahi Galan and came close to that. He hit 71 minutes in this one compared to 59 minutes last round.
Auger-Aliassime in the defeat flattered to deceive as he committed 13 unforced errors. He led 2-0 at the start of the second but those were the only two games he won all match and Sinner's off period didn't last at all too long. He hit eight double faults and Sinner stormed to victory without producing his A game in many ways. He finds out his next opponent in a few hours time with it either being Holger Rune or one of the stories of the tournament so far in Frenchman Terence Atmane.
Atmane who has no clothing sponsor or anything due to a lowly ranking dumped out Taylor Fritz and jostles with Rune who like Sinner is featured as Donald Duck in the Danish comic. But he got a bit of an easier ride as he saw off Frances Tiafoe with the American throwing in the towel.
Sinner in sealing his latest win has reached 25 matches in his winning streak on hard courts. He joins elite company in doing so alongside the so called Big Four in Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray. He last lost in Beijing last October to a certain Carlos Alcaraz. He has since won the ATP Finals and Australian Open.
He goes on to defend the US Open in the coming weeks too and holds all of the big hard court crowns in tennis currently. Albeit Alcaraz currently holds the key when it comes to Year End No.1 by nearly 1.5k points and that is semi aided by the fact that Sinner didn't play for most of the early season.
“Yeah… The first rounds are never easy because you have to get used to the conditions and situation on court. After a few matches you know where you have to work on. It’s natural that we players feel better day after day. I’m very happy about that. Today I felt great on court. I think we saw that. But every day is gonna be different. I have to be very careful. Tomorrow is a day off. We try to have good reps in. Then we see what I can do in the semis," said Sinner post match.
