WTA Beijing Day 1 Predictions Including Bianca Andreescu vs Anna Bondar
USA Today Sports

Bianca Andreescu suffered an ankle sprain at her home WTA 1000 event in Montreal over a month ago, adding to her long list of injuries over the last few seasons. But the Canadian has so much innate skill that sometimes she returns as if she were never gone in the first place. In her only prior China Open appearance, she reached the quarterfinals in 2019. Six years later, she’ll need to produce a high standard of play against the in-form qualifier Anna Bondar. Who do you think will come out on top?

WTA Beijing Day 1 Predictions

Lucia Bronzetti vs Kamilla Rakhimova

Head-to-head: First meeting

Lucia Bronzetti wasn’t part of Italy’s Billie Jean King Cup Finals line-up last week despite being extremely vital in the team’s success last year. Her form this season hasn’t been great, but she has her moments like the fourth round in Cincinnati or the final in Cluj back in February. It’s not easy to beat her, even if you know she’s not going to play anything spectacular. Being solid and showing determination might be enough here, Kamilla Rakhimova is a little more volatile.
Prediction: Bronzetti in 3

Polina Kudermetova vs Maddison Inglis

Head-to-head: First meeting

Polina Kudermetova has been struggling to back up her run in Brisbane from the start of the season, only picking up a select few wins since. But this could be a chance to earn one of them. Maddison Inglis got through qualifying with a marathon against Rebeka Masarova and despite many years circling around this level, she’s never made the push to break Top 100. The Australian doesn’t have that much identity on the court and doesn’t possess a standout trait. Kudermetova has to take advantage if she is to regain confidence.
Prediction: Kudermetova in 2

Elsa Jacquemot vs Antonia Ruzic

Head-to-head: Ruzic 1-0

When they played about a year ago at an ITF event in Bratislava, Antonia Ruzic ended up taking the win pretty comfortably. But a year later things might have changed, especially as both women have made big leaps in the rankings since then. Elsa Jacquemot speaks out to me a bit more as a long-term threat on the tour, but it’s tough to ignore that she didn’t look close to her best in the final qualifying round loss to Victoria Jimenez Kasintseva. She’d need to pick up her level quickly.
Prediction: Ruzic in 3

Bianca Andreescu vs Anna Bondar

Head-to-head: Andreescu 1-0

The injury saga of Bianca Andreescu continues and while she was healthy for a while at the start of the summer, falling in Roland Garros and Wimbledon qualifying didn’t allow us to see what she was capable of. Now she’s coming back after twisting her ankle in Montreal, which at least is an injury she should be totally clear of after more than a month. But Anna Bondar is in great form, so it’s not clear that Andreescu’s natural talent will just be enough to take the win despite the rust.
Prediction: Bondar in 3
