It promises to be a superb WTA Guadalajara final. 17-year-old American Iva Jovic and Emiliana Arango have yet to win a WTA title, but that will change for one of them. We here at LWOT give our prediction and analysis in this article, but which woman do you expect to triumph?
Head-to-head: First meeting
The players’ respective paths to the final have differed sharply. Jovic needed three sets to defeat Katarzyna Kawa, Victoria Jimenez Kasintseva, and Nikola Bartunkova, and the win against Jimenez Kasintseva was in a deciding set tiebreak. The teenager’s only straight-sets victory came against the eighth seed Camila Osoro in the round of 16. By contrast, Arango benefited from Magda Linette retiring in the opening round before comfortably prevailing against Storm Hunter, Marina Stakusic, and Elsa Jacquemot.
This will be Jovic’s first WTA final. Arango’s sole previous experience at this stage was disastrous, ending in a 0-6 0-6 thumping by Emma Navarro in Merida earlier this year. Whether the Colombian is haunted by or learns from that moment will influence her chances of winning the Guadalajara title. Although she started as a significant underdog against Navarro, Arango failed to rise to the occasion.
Jovic freezing in her maiden WTA final cannot be ruled out, and Arango needs to be ready if that happens. However, I like the 17-year-old’s chances of winning the title. Arango’s game is based on extending the rallies and frustrating opponents. Jovic prefers being aggressive, but she is also capable of being patient in the rallies. Her impressive athleticism makes it easier not to panic during lengthy points, something others have done against Arango in Guadalajara.
The young star must also mentally and physically recover from a lengthy semifinal. I think she can do that, especially with the adrenaline of playing in her first final. If Jovic is psychologically ready for a battle, her superior hitting and natural talent should prove decisive.
Prediction: Jovic in 2
