The Hong Kong Open is one of three WTA 250 tournaments taking place in the final week of the regular tennis season. Six matches are scheduled on Day 1, with Germany’s Eva Lys one of those set to get her campaign underway. Who will advance?

WTA Hong Kong Day 1 Predictions

Cody Wong vs Viktoriya Morvayova

Head-to-head: Wong 1-1 Morvayova

Hong Kong native Cody Wong has a third straight wild card in this tournament. She lost in the opening round in her previous two appearances. Will the third time be the charm? Wong is fortunate to draw a lower-ranked opponent this year. Morvayova sits over 50 spots below Wong, although she has played two matches in qualifying and will have acclimated to the conditions and playing surface. The Slovak has also beaten Wong in their only match of 2025 on the ITF. Wong’s search for that first win might extend for another year.
Prediction: Morvayova in 3

Cristina Bucsa vs Ye-Xin Ma

Head-to-head: first meeting

For all of Ye-Xin Ma’s winning spree on hard courts, she has one title to show for it on the ITF circuit. The 26-year-old has a 33-20 record on the surface at all levels and powered through the qualifying draw in Hong Kong without dropping a set. She has lost just two matches in her last ten and has recorded some impressive wins in that run with wins over Jodie Burrage, Jimenez Kasintseva, and Alina Korneeva. But she faces a more sterner test in her opening match. Cristina Bucsa is one of the tour’s serial counterpunchers and she is rarely troubled in these matches.
Prediction: Bucsa in 2

Eva Lys vs Kristiana Sidorova

Head-to-head: first meeting

Eva Lys broke into the Top 50 for the first time earlier this month. She achieved that following her terrific run to the quarterfinals of the China Open. It was a tournament where Lys earned a massive win over Elena Rybakina and ultimately lost to Coco Gauff. Kristiana Sidorova is ranked outside the Top 500 of the WTA rankings, but the 19-year-old Russian came through qualifying, where she upset former Top 40 player Zarina Diyas. Sidorova is still not accustomed to playing at this level. This will be her main draw debut. Lys’ experience will prove decisive.
Prediction: Lys in 2
