Expect an entertaining second day with seven matches on the slate. As ever, we here at LWOT will be offering our predictions for every match on day two, including Belinda Bencic vs Aliaksandra Sasnovich. But who will progress to the next round?
Head-to-head: Fernandez 1-0 Wang
Leylah Fernandez won this tournament on her debut two seasons ago. Last year, the Canadian made it to the semifinal stage and lost to eventual champion Diana Shnaider. A top 20 year-end ranking looks out of reach for Fernandez, who could finish below Victoria Mboko as the country’s #1 WTA player. On an individual level, Fernandez has won more titles this year than in any other season and could still top it off with another trophy this week. But this is a tricky opener. Wang Xiyu is also a left-hander with a potent forehand. If it turns into a scrappy affair, Fernandez will do enough to get as many balls back and force the errors out of the Chinese’s racket.
Head-to-head: first meeting
After a poor run of three wins from 11 matches, Sofia Kenin exceeded expectations last time out at the WTA Tokyo Open, where she reached the semifinals (losing to eventual champion Belinda Bencic in three sets). Himeno Saktasume, meanwile, won two qualifying matches to reach the main draw of a WTA tournament for the first time this season. Kenin has the higher upside, and if the American remains consistent and disciplined, she should cruise into the second round.
Head-to-head: first meeting
Katie Boulter started the year ranked a career high of #23. She was the British #1 in the WTA rankings. But the 29-year-old failed to make up for lost points from her San Diego title win. The tournament was scrapped from the 2025 calendar. Boulter’s other title defense in Nottingham was unsuccessful. She won just three main draw matches after Wimbledon. Alexandra Eala sits on the cusp of a top 50 breakthrough after a fine breakout season. However, in recent weeks, the 20-year-old has been on a wretched run of results. She has lost four in a row and there has been no hint that her fortunes will change in Hong Kong.
Prediction: Boulter in 3
