This week’s WTA tournament in Monterrey has a surprisingly good field for an event played the week right before the US Open. While there are no top 10 players in the draw, it features plenty of quality players who will have ambitions of a deep run in New York and as such this week should be filled with high quality tennis.
Head-to-head: Cocciaretto 1-0 Ruzic
This could hardly be a close matchup on paper, with the two players separated by only two ranking spots. When they faced earlier this year in Bastad, Cocciaretto won with relative ease but on hard courts the matchup should look quite different, and Ruzic definitely has an excellent chance to get her revenge here.
Prediction: Ruzic in 3
Head-to-head: Haddad Maia 4-1 Bouzkova
Although Haddad Maia leads the head to head by a clear margin, Bouzkova got her first win in this matchup when they faced in Rome and has been having the better season, what with Haddad Maia struggling after a strong 2024. At this point, Bouzkova looks like the better player and on a hard court she should have the advantage in this matchup.
Prediction: Bouzkova in 3
Head-to-head: Alexandrova 1-0 Tomljanovic
Tomljanovic won an epic first round, breaking to stay in the tournament twice while saving match points in the process before winning in the deciding set tiebreak. Alexandrova should be far too big a hurdle for her, though, especially after such an herculean effort today. Alexandrova is at her career highest ranking, playing some great tennis and should advance here.
Prediction: Alexandrova in 2
Head-to-head: Shnaider 2-0 Rakhimova
Shnaider hasn’t progressed as much as many expected this year, but she has another opportunity for a breakthrough next week at the US Open and will be looking to gain momentum ahead of it. On paper, she has a very clear edge over Rakhimova, who she beat in straight sets even as a teenager. Under normal circumstances, she should advance here.
Prediction: Shnaider in 2
