Mirra Andreeva had a bye in the opening round of the WTA 1000 in Montreal, then got a walkover from Bianca Andreescu, which means that her first match of the 2025 National Bank Open will come against 2-time WTA Tour champion this year McCartney Kessler. But there’s a lot more than that on the Thursday line-up, including Daria Kasatkina and Marta Kostyuk meeting for the 8th time. Who do you think will come out on top?
Head-to-head: First meeting
Lin Zhu’s ranking has dropped to 493, largely due to the injuries that have hindered her over the last couple of seasons. Her level seems back to normal with wins over Varvara Gracheva and Ekaterina Alexandrova this week. When the Chinese flat-hitter gets hot, she can be challenging to stop. Suzan Lamens is pretty solid all-round, but she might be in trouble if Zhu locks in off the ground and piles up the pressure. Upside over consistency here? Let’s see.
Prediction: Zhu in 3
Head-to-head: Kasatkina 4-3
Marta Kostyuk won her first match in two-and-a-half months when she defeated Marketa Vondrousova in her opening match. The Ukrainian’s slump came quite unexpectedly as she keeps developing her game and seemed like a player far too complete to fall into something like this. Meanwhile, Daria Kasatkina has just been very average this season and is slowly slipping down the rankings. Kostyuk just seems like she’s got more room to grow at the moment.
Prediction: Kostyuk in 3
Head-to-head: Yastremska 1-0
Emma Navarro has already fended off one power-hitter during this tournament with a quick win over Rebecca Marino. Dayana Yastremska is certainly an improved version of that style and has been a threat with decent consistency this season. She also defeated Navarro during their only match at the Australian Open last year. Yastremska is more than capable of locking up the upset, but she’ll need to make sure her best patches somehow outweigh the bad ones.
Prediction: Yastremska in 3
Head-to-head: First meetings
Sure, Mirra Andreeva has suffered a few “bad” losses in the latter stages of Slams, but overall you can’t deny the teenager is making the step up everyone was expecting this year. She should be a threat during the North American swing as well, although this match has her in an interesting position. Andreeva’s essentially coming into the event in the third round after the walkover from Bianca Andreescu, while McCartney Kessler already posted a good win over Maya Joint. Is it enough to tip the scales? Probably not.
Prediction: Andreeva in 2
