Day 2 of the WTA 500 event in Ningbo will feature plenty of high-quality matches, with several players looking to make a final push towards the WTA finals or a better year-end ranking position. The very top players aren’t present here after an intense tournament in Wuhan, but there’s still plenty of top-level players and high-quality matches to look forward to. But who will advance?

Head-to-head: Tauson 2-2 Tomljanovic

Tauson has been on the cusp of a top 10 debut for a while, but her results in recent tournaments have been quite disappointing and have stopped her from taking that step so far. This tournament is another opportunity. Despite the 2-2 head-to-head record, she is clearly a superior player to Tomljanovic at this point in their respective careers and should have a clear edge here.

Hanyu Guo vs Liudmila Samsonova

Head-to-head: first meeting

On paper, this is one of the most one-sided matchups we will see the entire week. While Guo does have the home advantage here, Samsonova is the far higher-ranked player for a reason. Guo played well in qualifying to reach the main draw, but under normal circumstances, Samsonova should be the one advancing here.

Yue Yuan vs Xinyu Wang

Head-to-head: Yuan 1-1 Wang

Wang might be the higher ranked player, but on current form Yuan seems to have the advantage here. She played at a very good level in Wuhan, making it very competitive against Jasmine Paolini, while Wang comes into this tournament on a four match losing streak. It should be a very close match either way, but it is fair to give Yuan a slight edge.

Victoria Mboko vs Dayana Yastremska

Head-to-head: first meeting

After her amazing title run in Canada, Mboko hasn’t really backed it up thus far, losing three matches in a row since. Given her talent, however, it seems to be only a matter of time before she has another big result and this tournament is another opportunity to do so. Luckily for her, she faces an opponent who is also on a losing streak (of four matches) in this first round and should be able to advance here.
