Daria Lodikova swept No. 3 seed Selena Janicijevic 7-6 (4), 7-6 (8) in the qualifying round of the Unicredit Iasi Open in Iasi, Romania, on Monday. The two were largely even statistically in a narrow two-set match, but Lodikova held the advantage in break points converted. The Russian went 4-for-5, while France's Janicijevic converted four of eight break points.
No. 8 seed Aliona Bolsova of Spain was also upset by the Czech Republic's Anna Siskova 3-6, 6-3, 6-0 on the strength of the 24-year-old Siskova's service games.
In other matches, No. 6 seed Jil Teichmann rallied against Romania's Miriam Bianca Bulgaru to win 1-6, 7-6 (2), 6-1, and No. 7 seed Irina-Camelia Begu handily defeated Japan's Nao Hibino 6-1, 6-2. Other winners Monday include No. 3 seed Ann Li, No. 5 seed Varvara Gracheva of France, Maja Chwalinska of Poland and Croatia's Jana Fett.
MSC Hamburg Ladies Open
No. 6 seed Moyuka Uchijima of Japan converted on just 30.8 percent of her break points and had eight double faults on her way to being upset by wild card entrant Nastasja Schunk 7-5, 6-3 in the first round of the Hamburg Open in Germany on Monday.
In a marathon match that took three hours and 21 minutes, Diane Parry of France outlasted Tara Wurth for a 7-6 (9), 3-6, 7-5 win. The Croatian had six aces to Parry's three, including five in the last set, and converted on 42.9 percent of her break points, but Parry was the last woman standing with 47 total points in the final set.
After extending the match to a third set, No. 8 seed Mayar Sherif retired, granting a walkover to Louisa Chirico 4-6, 7-5, 3-0. Egypt's Sherif had saved 13 break points while Chirico saved seven.
