Beatriz Haddad Maia is the main star of the 2025 WTA Sao Paulo Open and as the top seed on home soil, the pressure is on her to try to claim the title. The Brazilian faces qualifier Miriana Tona as the remaining eight first-round matches are set to be completed on Tuesday. Who do you think will prevail?
Head-to-head: First meeting
Francesca Jones has been on fire in the last few months, winning the WTA 125 in Contrexeville, WTA 250 in Palermo, and qualifying for the US Open. It’s led her to a Top 100 debut and in a draw like Sao Paulo, she should be a factor. Last week in Guadalajara, she also produced a solid run with a quarterfinal exit to Panna Udvardy. It just seems like right now she’s at a level where you can expect wins against lower-ranked opponents from her consistently, especially with Lina Glushko struggling to get anything going this year.
Prediction: Jones in 2
Head-to-head: Strakhova 3-0
Ana Candiotto is getting a major opportunity here, debuting on the WTA Tour despite never being ranked inside the Top 500. She also played doubles with Beatriz Haddad Maia, who must be a major inspiration for any Brazilian up-and-comer. A cinderella run from someone like her could really put this event in Sao Paulo on the tennis map this week. But it’s going to be difficult to get it and while Valeriya Strakhova never broke through, she’s been around the ITF circuit forever.
Prediction: Strakhova in 2
Head-to-head: First meeting
Berfu Cengiz started her season in June after suffering an injury and is still just 2-9 for the season. That’s particularly disappointing after a strong 2024 campaign saw her capture 3 ITF titles and break the Top 200. It’s really all about the fitness here as the talented Turk would have been a potential dark horse at an event like that if she was in good shape. With a powerful forehand, she’s got a higher upside than Jazmin Ortenzi and maybe this is where she starts turning her season around.
Prediction: Cengiz in 3
Head-to-head: First meeting
Beatriz Haddad Maia is the biggest star of this tournament by far, ranked 55 spots higher than No. 2 seed Solana Sierra. The Brazilian getting to play this event at home must feel pretty special to her and she’ll definitely attract a good crowd. With a heavily negative win/loss record for the year despite a few glimpses, she’s not exactly the most consistent Top 30 player on the tour. But the quality gap between her Miriana Tona is wide enough that it feels almost impossible for the top seed to go out here.
Prediction: Haddad Maia in 2
