After Aryna Sabalenka won three consecutive titles in Wuhan, we are certain to have a new champion this year in Wuhan after Jessica Pegula eliminated the world #1 today in the third set today. The final will be an all-American affair, with Pegula taking on Coco Gauff, who is yet to drop a set this week, for all the marbles. It is sure to be a very exciting final and one with a very unpredictable outcome.
Head-to-head: Pegula 4-2 Gauff
The two Americans had very different paths to this final, with Gauff not dropping a single set en route while Pegula played a deciding set in every single match. That could suggest that Gauff has been playing better, but Pegula produced a really high level of play to take down the world #1 and three time defending champion at Wuhan Sabalenka, clearly stepping up from what she had shown in the previous rounds. If she can maintain that kind of level (and Gauff maintains hers too), this will certainly be a very competitive and high level final, decided by small details on the most important points. The head-to-head is 4-2 in favor of Pegula, but Gauff actually won their most recent meeting at the WTA finals last year and the significant age gap between the two certainly has some influence on the current head to head score. As it stands right now, there’s not much to separate the two players level wise and both seems to be in very good form at the moment; in fact, both players reached the semifinals of Beijing last week (so they weren’t that far from meeting in the final there too) and seem primed for a strong end of the year, with the winner tomorrow certainly getting a big boost going into the final stretch of the season.
Prediction: Pegula in 3
