Wuhan Open Round-Up: Victoria Mboko's run of losses extends to three, Alexandrova moves into live top-10 as Tauson stays in the hunt

The Wuhan Open has begun with a strong first round. While awaiting the debut of the top favorites, several significant names have already taken the court, including the notable victory of Ekaterina Alexandrova over Victoria Mboko. This win virtually assures the Russian of a spot in the Top 10 when the tournament concludes.

With a draw of 56 players, only the top 8 seeds received a first-round bye, yet the very first day saw some important clashes. In addition to Alexandrova's win, the 10th seed Clara Tauson—another player fighting for a Top-10 debut—earned a tough victory, while the 15th seed Diana Shnaider suffered an early elimination.

Alexandrova dominates Mboko and clinches live No. 10 spot

This was arguably the most interesting match of the opening day, with 19-year-old Victoria Mboko seeking to return to winning ways but facing a difficult draw against the experienced Ekaterina Alexandrova (World No. 11). Alexandrova easily prevailed with a 6-3, 6-2 victory in one hour and 21 minutes. The Russian knows she is at a critical point in the season—with the best chance yet to crack the Top 10—while Mboko suffers her third consecutive defeat and remains without a win since her surprise Canadian Open WTA 1000 title.

Alexandrova controlled the match from the start, showing her class and greater experience to maintain control throughout. In the first set, she took a 5-0 lead but slightly relaxed, allowing Mboko to fight back for a long spell, though it wasn't enough for a comeback.

The second set wasn't much different: Mboko started by winning her first service game, but then Alexandrova seized control with five consecutive games, building a lead that was virtually insurmountable. The Russian closed out the 6-3, 6-2 victory without complications, sending her into the second round.

Alexandrova arrived in Wuhan with the chance to enter the Top 10 for the first time in her career, especially following the withdrawal of Zheng Qinwen—the 2024 finalist who could not defend her points and will drop out of the Top 10 for the first time in nearly two years. The 31-year-old Russian debuted with a win and currently totals 3,136 points, placing her at No. 10 in the live rankings. The only way Alexandrova would fail to enter the Top 10 is if Tauson reaches at least the final, or if one of her pursuers (Navarro, Bencic, Osaka, or Noskova) wins the title.

Tauson's service sends her into second round

Clara Tauson has undoubtedly been one of the most consistent players on the Tour this season, as her World No. 12 ranking demonstrates. The Dane secured another victory in her WTA 1000 debut, defeating the always challenging Olga Danilovic (World No. 42) 6-3, 7-5. The Dane once again showed that her serve is perhaps her main weapon, winning 72% of her service points (79% on the first serve) compared to only 54% for Danilovic (65% on the first serve).

The Dane was forced to play under pressure multiple times, saving 5/6 break points, while capitalizing on some of her constant break chances, securing 4 breaks out of 14 opportunities. Tauson is another player fighting for a Top-10 spot, which she could achieve if she reaches at least the final. Regardless, looking ahead to the end of the season, Tauson is 11th in the Race to the Finals, and every win she can secure will be key to breaking into the Top 10, perhaps before the season ends.

15th seed Shnaider falls to qualifier Siniakova

The biggest 'surprise' of the day was the elimination of the 15th seed Diana Shnaider, who remains far from the form she showed in the last couple of years, having lost the consistency she once displayed. It's difficult to call it a true surprise when she faced a rival of the caliber of Kateřina Siniaková (World No. 62), a former Top-30 player who came in with good momentum on the Wuhan courts after successfully navigating the qualifying rounds. The victory went to the Czech player with a convincing 6-4, 6-4 scoreline. Siniakova maintained the lead throughout and managed her emotions to prevent a Shnaider comeback.

The Russian, who had been one of the most consistent players in the first half of the year, has struggled in the second half. Her title win at the Guadalajara Open now looks like a brief flash of brilliance during an irregular last few months, as she has managed only one victory in her last five appearances. Siniaková advanced to the second round, where she will face teenager Maya Joint, aiming to maintain her winning streak in Wuhan.
