Nintendo is branching out into the film industry. After 2023’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” was an instant smash hit, a sequel is rolling out next year, titled “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.” In addition, a live-action film based on The Legend of Zelda is set for release in 2027, and a Donkey Kong movie is reportedly in development. So, what other Nintendo franchises could be heading for the big screen? Here are five Nintendo franchises that would make great movies.

1. Metroid

This is one of Nintendo’s darkest franchises, and it seems made for the big screen. I see it as a live-action, PG-13-rated space action movie. The visuals could be full of dazzling planets and creepy aliens, to say nothing of how Samus Aran could translate into an awesome movie hero along the lines of Ellen Ripley. It’s a perfect opportunity for Nintendo to embrace its adult side.

2. Luigi’s Mansion

Let’s give Mario’s brother his own movie! Charlie Day’s delightful Luigi from “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” could absolutely hold himself as the protagonist, and there is already a trilogy of awesome games that could serve as inspiration for his movie. Professor E. Gad could make a hilarious movie sidekick, and the mansions full of ghosts seem ready to be adapted into animation. It could make a great Halloween movie.

3. Animal Crossing

This one might seem strange, but an Animal Crossing anime movie already exists, though it was only released in Japan. An American version could be super charming like the games. What could the plot be? Well, a human could end up in a world full of animals that looks idyllic at first, but there could be some secret threat. Maybe Tom Nook has ulterior motives for keeping the villagers under his thumb.

4. Earthbound

Earthbound is one of the most amazingly weird RPGs to ever exist, and it could make an incredibly quirky animated movie. Perhaps it could even be 2D-animated, which would let the movie take full advantage of the game’s abstract world where there’s a cult that worships the color blue, a giant man who’s also a dungeon, and one of the creepiest villains in history.

5. Super Smash Bros.

Bring on a Nintendo Cinematic Universe! You may wonder how a crossover could work when some of the Nintendo movies are animated and some are live-action. Simple, just have the live-action characters enter dimensional portals that turn them into animated characters. The games already have a villain, Master Hand,  that the heroes could work together to defeat. It could be the greatest crossover movie since the “Avengers” films.

Conclusion

Other Nintendo franchises, such as Kirby, Fire Emblem, and Star Fox, could also make great movies. Will we see a Smash Bros. culmination in the future? No matter what they decide to adapt for the big screen, Nintendo’s future in the movie industry looks bright, but a cinematic universe would make it even more awesome.
