Ascendants’ exact marketing slogan when aired on the Future Games Show Summer Showcase, June 7, was capture the flag on crack, and, well, that tends to stick out. The game is set in a BioPunk style, with vibrant and striking colors interspersing a devastating FPS futuristic war. In this squad game, it is not just player versus player, but player versus player versus enemies (monsters). The high-paced, high-stakes battles and unpredictable twists leave this game, whose roots are capture the flag, one of the most unique FPS twists available, and it comes to PC soon.

Ascendant Breaks Free of the Typical FPS Mold

Ascendant is the second capture the flag game to be shown this weekend during the plethora of major announcements. Yet the two games are quite different, despite the squad-based FPS foundation by which both are built. This game describes itself on Steam as “High stakes, high chaos, and the most unpredictable twist on capture-the-flag yet. Outwit ruthless opponents, face mutant wildlife, and secure three biocores in this fast-paced FPS where wild events can turn the tables in an ever-shifting BioPunk arena. This is ASCENDANT – bring backup.”

What are those twists, exactly? Well, each game has clear variance, so that no playthrough is exactly the same. Also, in this version of Capture the Flag, it is not about just going against the opposing squad. “After a thousand-year cryo-nap, you wake up to find the world’s gone to sh*t: mutant wildlife, rogue tech, and rival squads battling for biocores filled with amber that keep your Shade alive. The catch? Every match is different. Thanks to the virtual Game Director, biocore locations, available rooms, and wild events shift with every game, forcing you to adapt… or die. Four teams, three biocores… You do the math.”

Customization is also key in Ascendant, as the weapon variations alone allow for over 3,000,000 different mod combinations. Strategy matters more than ever before. “Every decision matters. Spend power wisely – your team’s collective pool grows as you fight mutant creatures, and how you use it can mean the difference between victory and a humiliating respawn. Unlock weapons and items mid-match to outsmart your enemies. Whether you’re upgrading your gear, setting traps, or going full kamikaze, victory comes down to one thing: adapting fast – because the map’s out to ruin your best-laid plans.”

There is no set release date yet, but the game is due out on Steam at some point in 2025, and can currently be wishlisted through their official Steam page. Gear up, it is going to be a wild ride!
