45 years ago, Mattel Electronics changed video game home consoles with the introduction of Intellivision. At the time, the biggest console gaming console by a significant margin was Atari. The introduction of Intellivision began the so-called “Console War.” So yes, the ’80s had the Console War and the Cola Wars. Now, in a move that would have been unthinkable back in the day, Atari and Plaion have collaborated on the new Intellivision Sprint. It merges 1980s console aesthetics with modern gaming technology. Sprint has an authentic design, with the classic gold and black surface and wood grain front. Some of the new technical upgrades include two wireless controllers, HDMI output, and a USB-A port for library expansion.
The 45 built-in games represent the Intellivision’s competitive edge in sports and strategy games. Among the highlights are sports games such as Baseball, Chip Shot Super Pro Golf, Soccer, Super Pro Skiing, Tennis, and Super Pro Football. And, there are also classic strategy games like B-17 Bomber, Sea Battle, Space Battle, and Utopia. Fan-favorite arcade games include Astrosmash, Shark! Shark!, Star Strike, Thin Ice, and Boulder Dash round out this collection of games. They’ve included two of the unique and eye-catching controller overlays for every game in the collection.
Atari’s VP, Matt Burnett, said in a statement, “We’re thrilled to celebrate Intellivision’s 45th anniversary, and what better way to honor it than by bringing back this innovative console for fans to experience once again?” Atari acquired the Intellivision brand, along with most of its catalog of games, last year. And now we’re finally seeing the first results. The Intellivision Sprint became available for pre-order starting October 17 for $149.99. The console will ship on December 5, 2025, just in time for the holiday season.
