On January 29th, news of internal conflict within Bilibili Gaming came to light. Reports came out that BLG’s top laner, Chen “Bin” Zebin, had disagreements with the team’s management. Four hours after the initial reports, BLG announced that Bin would play in their series the following day against Top Esports. Fans’ belief in BLG and Bin is dwindling, especially after the World Championship drama last year. The majority of the information we know about the incident is speculation.
All of the information on the drama comes from King Valekir’s reports on X. In the Chinese afternoon, reports suggested that Bin had left the Bilibili Gaming team office after a dispute with management. The reports mentioned that the disagreements did not involve head coach, Yang “Daeny” dae-in, or mid-laner, Zhuo “Knight” Ding. At no point was Bin kicked by BLG; he left on his own accord. Apparently, Bin had made his way back to his hometown.
A couple of hours later, BLG had registered Yang “Wenbo” Wenbo as their top laner on the LPL website. Wenbo is the top laner for BLG Junior, BLG’s academy team. BLG later made a post announcing that Wenbo is “officially promoted to the main roster effective immediately”. Around this time, Bin had removed BLG from his Weibo profile. Wenbo was likely a temporary replacement while BLG searched for a permanent substitute. Given the severity of the reports, this was not an isolated incident. Arguments like this one likely occurred between Bin and management on previous occasions.
A little while later, Bin returned to the team office to apologise for his actions. After he had calmed down from his high emotions, he realised his mistake. During his apology, he stated he would take scrims and matches more seriously in the future. The entire situation lasted around 4 hours. Shortly after Bin’s apology, BLG reinstated him into the starting line-up for the series against Top Esports.
Late last year, pictures of Bilibili Gaming players and staff at a business that had gambling and prostitution surfaced. These came after BLG’s early exit from the World Championship. Both of these are frowned upon heavily by the Chinese community. At the time, BLG did not make an official statement. Many of the BLG members produced potential alibis. Bin’s alibi was that he got double eyelid surgery. Days later, an image of Bin with both eyes covered emerged. The image supposedly confirmed that he had the surgery. However, there was no official proof that the surgery took place before or after the events. After this fiasco, many fans decided to end their support of BLG.
The drama between BLG and Bin has further hurt the fans’ relationship with the team and the player. Regardless of who is at fault in the situation, they feel like both sides can do better to resolve these issues.
To further rub salt into the wounds, BLG went on to lose 2-1 to TES. TES has struggled in the LPL so far, with the victory being only their third match win of the year. BLG, on the other hand, started well, but has since fallen to a 4-3 record. They currently sit in third place in their group, having won one more game than fourth-place Weibo Gaming. If BLG’s form continues to drop, fans may ask more questions about Bin’s inclusion in the BLG roster. Expectations for this roster are that they should be one of the best in the LPL. The addition of Park “Viper” Do-hyeon has skyrocketed the expectations of the defending LPL champions.
On the surface, the drama appears scathing. However, the majority of teams face internal conflict. Professional sports teams have similar conflicts. The difference in this case was that the information went public. The drama may not have a lasting impact on the roster. However, public opinions of the team and Bin are forever changed.
