As players finish Dragon Age: The Veilguard, the latest game in BioWare’s fantasy RPG franchise, the question of what comes next has been raised. BioWare’s other major franchise, Mass Effect, sits somewhere on the horizon. However, while the as-of-yet unnamed Mass Effect 5 has fans excited, some wonder if there is more to come for Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Will the game’s release be followed by additional content? What’s next for the Dragon Age franchise? Let’s take a look at what the developers have to say.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, BioWare has confirmed through creative director John Epler that the studio has shifted its focus to Mass Effect 5. There are no current plans for downloadable expansions to Dragon Age: The Veilguard, with the studio ready to leave the game to stand alone. Whereas previous games in the franchise had substantial DLC additions, ranging from new areas to entire expansions or epilogues, the studio seems ready to move on. Without DLC already planned, it is unlikely to see some emerge quickly, and developers may have already been transitioned onto the Mass Effect team.
BioWare has been teasing the future of its franchises for several years. When they showed off the fourth Dragon Age at The Game Awards in 2020, they also teased for the first time a fifth Mass Effect. Mass Effect 5 is seemingly a follow-up to Mass Effect Andromeda that will tie that game’s setting to the characters of the original trilogy. The studio has had very little to share about what they’ve been working on over the last few years, with details on Dragon Age: The Veilguard only arising a few months before launch. Many wonder if we will have to wait just as long to get more Mass Effect news.
N7 Day is the fan community’s created holiday celebrating the Mass Effect franchise. BioWare has adopted the holiday as an opportunity to show appreciation to its fans. While Mass Effect 5 didn’t receive any tangible updates for the day, BioWare did offer a special set of clothing for Dragon Age: The Veilguard that resembles the armor worn by Commander Shepard, the protagonist of the original Mass Effect trilogy. Players can utilize the game’s Wardrobe system to apply these appearances to their Rook as they please. While it’s a small reward, it is proof that BioWare is keeping the Mass Effect community in mind.
It seems that Dragon Age: The Veilguard will speak for itself as a game. Many will appreciate not having to buy DLC to get access to the full package, with no characters or storylines locked behind additional payments. The long wait for Mass Effect 5 has begun. While it may be years before we see active footage or gameplay, fans are ready to see what comes next. While Mass Effect Andromeda was a controversial title, the promise of bringing the original trilogy’s characters back has made fans excited. Hopefully, Mass Effect 5 will bring joy to the fans when BioWare reveals it sometime in the next few years.
