The Portal in Destiny 2 has taken some time to learn and optimize. After a week, players have begun to reach the upper echelons of the power cap. We have spent enough time in the Portal ourselves to understand how to grind power in Destiny 2 optimally. We would like to share with you the tips and tricks we have picked up while moving towards the power cap.
We need a quick refresher on the power system in Destiny 2 before we look at how to optimize the grind. At the beginning of the Edge of Fate, all players get reset to 10 power. From 10 to 200, all gear that drops will be higher than a player’s base power. From 200 onwards, you will need to play Portal activities to increase your power. Until the Ashe and Iron update, players can reach 450. There is no limit to the grind; every Portal activity you do can award higher power gear. The more you increase your power, the more difficult the activities you have access to.
As you continue to increase your power in Destiny 2, some parts of your gear may fall behind. Fortunately, some Portal activities have a focus drop. You can use these to your advantage if you need to increase a particular slot. Keep in mind, you are not guaranteed the specific drop. You must also receive a B or higher to have a chance to get it. There is a daily rotation for these if you want to wait for the ideal drop.
One of the ways you earn extra score for activities is through your reward multiplier. You increase it by using weapons and armor with a higher power level and using any of the featured/new gear. It is the easiest way to guarantee you increase your score without increasing the difficulty of the activity.
If you do not want to increase combatant difficulty but need extra reward score, look no further than the player stakes modifiers. Examples of these are: No HUD, Equipment Locked, and Avant Garde (You have to use Featured Gear). While these might be frustrating, they do not make the activities significantly more difficult. Avoid using Boons where possible, as they can decrease score.
Keep an eye out for the activities that give additional bonus drops. It can be a quick way to earn extra drops for doing the same activity. The only hope is that you do not get a drop in the same slot. Pray to Destiny 2 RNG to be on your side.
The time investment for the rewards you get from Fireteam Ops is often not worth it. The only reason to run them is when you have a bonus drop from them. You will find running Solo Ops or Pinnacle Ops with friends a better use of your time. Fireteam Ops takes kills into account, making it more tedious to reach the A rewards. You will likely complete two Solo Ops activities in the time it takes to complete one Fireteam Ops.
