Some undiscovered Mario levels have been found. After thirty-nine years, a speedrunner discovered a bunch of previously unseen levels in the Japanese version of Super Mario Bros 2, better known as Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels. One would think that when a game is almost four decades old, all of its secrets would have been found a long time ago, but sometimes video games can surprise you.

The Undiscovered Mario Levels

The Japanese version of Super Mario Bros 2, which was released on the Famicom in 1986, is infamous for being insanely difficult. In fact, it was deemed too difficult for American gamers, so Americans got a completely different game for their sequel to Super Mario Bros. The Japanese version wouldn’t see an American release until the release of the Super Mario All-Stars collection on the Super Nintendo. On that collection, the Japanese Super Mario Bros 2 had its name changed to Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels.

Now, according to IGN, a speedrunner by the name of Kosmic found some undiscovered Mario levels while playing The Lost Levels. Through many combinations of tricky maneuvers, he managed to get the game to send him into unknown territory.

What Are These Levels Like?

Since they are unfinished levels, many of them are full of glitches. At one point, Kosmic found himself trapped in a box made of brick squares, and he had to restart the game to get out. Other times, he found that he could save his game during these levels, but he never knew where he would end up when he loaded his save. Some levels are almost the same as the game’s completed levels, while others were glitchy messes that crashed the game. In total, Cosmic claims he found over twenty undiscovered Mario levels, though many of them were nearly unplayable.

Conclusion

For many casual players, it’s probably not worth the effort to seek out these previously undiscovered Mario levels, especially since the levels might crash the game. Still, it’s an interesting look into the process of making the game, and it’s a thrill to think that new stuff could be found in the game almost forty years later. Who knows what other Mario secrets are waiting to be discovered? Try to make a game glitch out sometime – it might lead you to some interesting places.
