The May 10th hack of Japanese game developer Arc System Works has cast a shadow over upcoming releases for Guilty Gear Strive. The internet is now starting to comb through sensitive company information and leak details about forthcoming products, including information about the game’s release for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. While Arc System Works has confirmed that the hack did happen, they assure fans and consumers that no user personal data was compromised.
Among the information found in the leaks was an interesting detail about the formatting for games on the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. Fans have had concerns about the system’s game-key cartridges. A game-key cartridge is a new concept, a piece of digital media that comes in a physical box. Consumers will have to download their games once they have access permission from the cartridge. This leaves many fans concerned for the availability of games in the future and towards the end of the Switch 2‘s lifespan.
The leak revealed three different formats for the Switch 2 release of Guilty Gear Strive. One was a digital-only edition, and another was for the game key card. However, the datamine did reveal a third format of the game, which was a physical release for the Switch 2. Nintendo has kept much of the information about its upcoming console a secret so far, leading up to the console’s release early in June. However, this does give hope that physical media in gaming may not be completely done away with yet.
The Arc System Works leaks revealed many unintended plans for Guilty Gear Strive’s future. As information hits the internet following the nearly terabyte-sized leak, some things have been all but confirmed. While it was still up in the air before, it is now mostly accepted that Lucy will be the last character for Season 4. Some character files were also found within the leaks and have begun to become rumored as potential DLC characters for Season 5 in Guilty Gear Strive.
These character files are all exclusively of characters who appeared in Guilty Gear Xrd and could simply be scrapped characters imported from that game. It does seem overwhelmingly likely that Guilty Gear Strive will continue for a 5th season. Fans have been urged by Arc System Works not to interact with any leaked media to avoid the risk of malware and compromised data. However, more information will likely come out following this leak in the coming days.
