Helldivers 2, Sony’s cooperative shooter, just pulled off “a 360” power move by claiming the top spot on Xbox’s best-selling games chart, despite it being exclusively for PlayStation platforms! Yes, you read that right (with the awful pun) – a game you literally cannot play on Xbox is somehow the most popular title on Microsoft’s storefront right now. I feel like I missed something.
Here’s what I’m saying: Imagine gamers scrolling through the Xbox store, seeing Helldivers 2 sitting pretty at number one, and then realizing they can’t actually play it, let alone buy it. It’s like being told the hottest restaurant in town has a permanent “Closed” sign on the door. The frustration must be real, and, honestly, I’m here for the chaos this is probably causing in gaming forums everywhere.
According to reports from VGT Gaming News, the game has secured not one but two spots in the top three best-selling games on Xbox. How does a PlayStation-based platform game become the best-selling game on Xbox when the game itself can’t be played on that system? (Oh, no. I’ve gone cross-eyed.)
One reason is that this was a sting operation by the PlayStation company itself, and it sent agents to infiltrate Xbox to convert more gamers to their side!… Or another, more reasonable answer, is that this popular game is in high demand and highly searched for everywhere outside of the PlayStation store.
Helldivers overall has been absolutely crushing it lately, generating massive amounts of player interest and social media chatter. Before we all start questioning reality (again), there are likely reasonable explanations for this bizarre Xbox outcome. One reason could be centered around Xbox’s gamers search algorithm. Its search engine most likely tracks all search interest, wishlisting, and general buzz around games. Thus, it may include games not available on the platform. Power to the people for making it happen.
It’s not a far-fetched scenario to imagine. Xbox gamers go searching for the game constantly, hoping against hope that maybe, just maybe, it’ll show up as available. They’re adding it to wishlists (if that’s even possible), sharing it with friends, and generally showing the algorithm that this is THE game everyone wants to play right now. From the imagery to the YouTube videos, players are sharing their love and joy they have for the game.
We all agree that Helldivers 2 is having its moment. The game has been praised for its intense cooperative gameplay, strategic depth, and the kind of friendly fire chaos that makes for great streaming content. Xbox players are watching PlayStation gamers have all the fun while they’re stuck on the sidelines like kids pressed against a candy store window. And it’s getting harder to avoid clips when everyone is playing and posting them everywhere.
The popularity surge isn’t surprising when you consider what it brings a buffet to the table. It’s got that perfect blend of tactical gameplay and absolute mayhem that makes for memorable gaming sessions. Players are diving into missions, accidentally (or not so accidentally) eliminating their teammates, and somehow loving every second of it. That includes the fans for the Let’s players and streamers who accidentally blow up their group.
Here’s what platform companies could be thinking. Sony, seeing the game dominate Xbox charts, might just be the wake-up call they need. Microsoft has been surprisingly open to cross-platform releases lately, and if there’s enough demand (which there clearly is), business logic might override console war mentality. At the end of the day, the gaming companies need to hear the demand and adjust to the trends that are flooding gamers’ wishlists and search engines.
The gaming industry has been moving toward a more platform-agnostic approach recently. We’ve seen Microsoft put some of its exclusives on PlayStation, and while Sony has been more protective of their titles, it’s not completely opposed to expanding their reach when it makes financial sense. I hope they don’t pull another Spider-Man incident with the Helldivers’ rights.
Helldivers 2 topping Xbox charts, while being unavailable on the platform, is either the greatest marketing stunt ever or the most beautiful display of gaming irony we’ve seen in years. Either way, it’s got everyone talking, and that’s probably exactly what Sony wanted. It could have been a marketing ploy for all we know, but I doubt anyone cares at this point. All of it boils down to the same end result.
Xbox players, you have my sympathy. Watching a game you desperately want to play sit at the top of your platform’s charts while being completely inaccessible is just cruel. I own a Mac, and most of the games I wanted to play are Windows-only. Here’s hoping this bizarre situation leads to some actual cross-platform availability, because honestly, everyone deserves to experience the chaotic joy. We want it and want it now, people! You gotta fight. For your right. To Hell-Dive!!!!
