Throughout the 1990s, an era when practically every studio desperately sought an iconic character to represent their brand, Crash Bandicoot reigned as one of the major gaming mascots. During this time, Hollywood began cautiously exploring the gaming world, resulting in a handful of film adaptations that often landed in the “so bad they’re good” category at best. Surprisingly, the character never received his own entry into this bizarre cinematic club, even with its massive popularity. So, what exactly stopped this iconic marsupial from getting its own film adaptation that so many other game characters endured during that decade?

Studios Rejected ’90s Crash Bandicoot Film Pitches

According to veteran gaming industry executive Shuji Utsumi, it certainly wasn’t for lack of trying, as he put in a lot of effort to bring a Crash Bandicoot movie into reality. In a conversation with The Game Business, Utsumi revealed that he actively pushed for the movie project back in the 1990s, but was consistently dismissed by major Hollywood studios he approached. Specifically, they didn’t approve of the entire concept, failing to see the potential value or appeal in adapting the character for the big screen at that time.

Consequently, the studios rejected the idea of a Crash Bandicoot movie outright despite Utsumi’s efforts and the characters’ significant fame within the gaming world. Ultimately, this decision would leave Crash without a cinematic counterpart during his peak years. As a result, Crash found himself joining the list of major ’90s icons who somehow avoided the notoriously hit-or-miss trend of video game movie adaptations due to this dismissal.

Video Games Weren’t “Culture” to 90s Hollywood

During Shuji Utsumi’s early days in the gaming industry, he recalled actively pitching for a Crash Bandicoot movie to major Hollywood studios. However, he would encounter widespread dismissal, recounting how executives treated video games like a trivial toy business, not worthy of serious cinematic adaptation. What Utsumi understood from their condescending attitude was that they fundamentally misunderstood the medium’s potential. That said, why did Hollywood gatekeepers so thoroughly underestimate video games back then?

Utsuma is now the president of Sega and has witnessed a dramatic reversal in that perception firsthand, as he currently oversees Sega’s properties. Moreover, he saw the incredible success of the Sonic the Hedgehog films, which recently turned into a billion-dollar franchise after the third installment. However, while this starkly contrasts with the rejection he faced decades earlier, to be honest, a hypothetical 1990s Crash Bandicoot film probably wouldn’t have fared well regardless.

Microsoft Holds Keys to Crash Movie Future

For instance, the infamous Mario live-action film from the 90s flopped spectacularly, only gaining a cult following because of its notorious awfulness. Although Other adaptations like Street Fighter were slightly more successful financially, they were hardly critical masterpieces and are mostly remembered for their campy charm. Given these other lackluster video game adaptations, especially during this time, a Crash Bandicoot film released during the character’s PlayStation peak would’ve likely suffered the same fate as its peers.

Likewise, a live-action film would’ve had crude 90s effects, which frankly sounds horrifying, and period 3D animation that wouldn’t have fared much better aesthetically. Now, in 2025, perhaps a decent adaptation could emerge, especially now that Microsoft owns Crash Bandicoot following several acquisitions, meaning any future film would naturally require Xbox’s green light. Currently, however, fans of the iconic character are awaiting new games as the marsupial hasn’t starred in a mainline entry since 2020.
