Indie Dev Spotlight: The Amazing World of Zeekerss

Every Wednesday, I will shine a spotlight on one indie dev, celebrating their successes, reviewing the games they’ve developed, and discussing what else the developers have planned for us as gamers. Celebrating these small developers helps me appreciate games even more, thanks to the success some of these games can achieve. Today, we are celebrating Zeekerss, and here’s the scoop.

Zeerkerss As An Indie Dev

Zeekerss is an indie dev who is probably most famous for the viral game Lethal Company, which was released in October 2023. Zeekerss made his debut by creating games on Roblox, such as Silent Dark and They Breathe, although those games are no longer active. Since then, Zeekerss has created 5 different games, all available on Steam. Zeekerss games are mostly horror-focused (my type of game BTW), usually involving avoiding some kind of monster and world or base exploration, which is a proven popular feature of Zeekerss games. Especially for his most popular game, Lethal Company, which shattered records and rose to critical acclaim.

The Viral Moment of Lethal Company

Lethal Company is a survival horror game, unique in the fact that at its release, there wasn’t anything like it. As an employee of the Company, you have to collect scrap from abandoned, industrialized moons to meet the Company’s profit quota. If you don’t, you are punished accordingly. This unique gameplay is hilarious in co-op gaming, with many videos and shorts showcasing these funny and terrifying moments.

This is part of the reason why Lethal Company rose to such virality. After topping Steam’s Global Top Seller List with more than 100,000 concurrent players after one month of its release, a few months later, Lethal Company sold more than 10 million copies. Some of its accolades include being nominated for Game of the Year in 2024 at the Steam Awards and winning Game of the Year at The Streamer Awards and The Vtuber Awards.

Playing the game myself and watching countless videos on YouTube of others playing the game, it still fills my heart with pure joy, collecting loot, evading monsters inside and outside the facility, and recording all those viral moments to watch later. Seriously, it’s a little crazy how those moments seem so scripted, but they aren’t. This game has become so successful, many games have come out that follow the Lethal Company footprint, which has become its own subgenre of games. Games such as Content Warning, Pilgrim, Klatka, and most recently R.E.P.O. have also gone viral; however, Lethal Company will always be the game that started it all.

Updates on Lethal Company have definitely slowed down; however, Zeekerss has announced some new updates he is working on for the game.

What Zeekerss Has Planned Next

Zeekers has announced that he will be working on more updates for Lethal Company, becoming inspired by the recent success of R.E.P.O., another Lethal Company-like game. Zeekerss has said,  “Perhaps playing REPO has also inspired me to switch back to Lethal Company. So I’ve begun work on V70.” I am definitely excited to see what Zeekerss has planned for Lethal Company and what changes will be made to the game.

As an indie dev, Zeeekerss has created one of the most successful and highly viral games since the start of the decade. Even now, players tune in to Lethal Company because we all understand how much fun it can be. Zeekerss deserves props for all that he has created, and I cannot wait to see what else he’s got up his sleeve as an indie dev.
