Exit 8 is the viral anomaly game that has enamored gamers and is now going to be adapted for the big screen. When I first heard news of this adaptation, I almost didn’t believe it. But lo and behold, we have ourselves an Exit 8 movie. An unsettling and trippy atmosphere, where, as an unnamed main character, we are trapped inside a train station looking down a hallway, where we must spot unusual anomalies to get closer to escaping this odd nightmare.

It’s a freaky horror concept that became a viral success, thanks to the various anomalies that can randomly appear throughout each level and playthrough. However, the movie adaptation is facing backlash over a post from the movie’s official X account. Here is all that happened and the response from viewers.

What Did the Exit 8 Movie Post on X?

On September 1, the movie’s official X account posted a content warning to viewers that states,

To All Viewers of the Film “Exit No. 8” This film is set in an endlessly continuing underground passageway, but it includes scenes that may evoke natural disasters such as tsunamis. When viewing the film, we kindly ask that you take note in advance. “Exit No. 8″ Film Production Committee”

Just to remind people, the first trailer for the movie came out back in March, and it was only about a week ago that the movie’s social media account put up this disclaimer. This is a huge pain point that viewers brought up when discussing this disclaimer online.

What Do Viewers From Japan Feel About It?

This drew varied responses from viewers. Many viewers did appreciate the disclaimer; however, a large group criticized how late this notification was, seeing as how the announcement for the movie and the trailer came out months before. If you weren’t aware, the comments all referred to the 2011 earthquake disaster in Japan that killed more than 20,000 people. There’s been a back and forth in the comment section, criticizing the movie and urging viewers who have had experiences with these disasters to refrain from watching the movie.

Users also wonder if Eirin, the Japanese film classification board, had rightly rated the film as G-rated, considering all of this. Exit 8 was widely advertised in Japan and has already come out in theaters. According to Anime News Network, it had the highest-grossing opening weekend for a live-action movie in Japan so far this year, and has seen widespread success that there are plans for theatrical releases in North America in the coming year.
