Mario Kart World is one of the most anticipated titles for the Nintendo Switch 2. During last week’s Nintendo Treehouse presentations, we got a long look at all the modes coming to the game. One of the most interesting is the addition of free roam. This will be the first time players will be able to drive around and explore without Lakitu constantly pulling them back on the track. During today’s 15-minute Mario Kart World event, they revealed more details about the mode.
The free roam mode can be a place where players and their friends can roam around, take pictures, and hang out. However, for those who need some direction, there will be “hundreds of missions” for players to complete. These can be done in a variety of ways. Missions will be unlocked by driving over the classic P Switches. This will trigger a mission, which could be anything from collecting blue coins in a certain amount of time to crossing a finish line.
The goal of the missions isn’t just for completionists. During the Mario Kart World event, the developers talked about how completing these missions can help you get better at the game. We’ve seen that there are many different ways to get a leg up on your opponents during a race. Players can grind on rails or drive on walls to try and edge out their opponents for first place. These missions will help players get more comfortable with those driving skills.
Players were shown a new Peach Medallion that can be collected in the free roam mode. They teased plenty of collectibles to uncover in the game. Given how many tracks there are, Nintendo has likely hidden plenty of goodies for players to find. When the game launches on June 5th, along with the Switch 2 console, expect to see many players posting about new and exciting goodies they find when they are driving around.
Nintendo isn’t just hashing out another installment in its popular series. Mario Kart World has plenty of new modes and features that will make this a fresh experience. For a racing game, Nintendo has continued to make it seem fresh and new. What are you most excited about when the game launches in early June?
