Typically, the month of June is a bit of a dry stretch for gaming. There are video game releases each month, but they slow down in summer. This year, though, the most anticipated video game releases for June are strong, thanks to one very big drop that has been dominating the industry discussions for months now. That, of course, is the release of the Nintendo Switch 2, coming June 5. Because of the launch, there are a ton of games paired along with it, both for launch day and the weeks and months following. While many are not entirely new IPs, there are still plenty of exciting drops coming to the June lineup.

Most Anticipated Video Game Releases for June Dominated by Updates

There is quite a list of games coming out for June 2025, which you can find here. Many of the most anticipated video game releases for June are for the Switch 2, and of those, they are largely dominated by remakes, remasters, and rereleases with Switch 2 upgrades. Still, there is plenty of variety for Nintendo fans to dig into, and even those who are not looking at the Switch 2 just yet, there are games for you as well.

Still, there are five games specifically I want to highlight as the most anticipated video game releases in June. Keep an eye out for these, and the many other games that will dominate your free time the rest of the year!

1. Mario Kart World (Switch 2) – June 5

There is no question that Mario Kart World is not just among the most anticipated video game releases for Switch 2 or even the month of June, but arguably the entire year. It has been over a decade since the last new Mario Kart mainline game was released. Mario Kart 8 has been a massive success, and releasing the Deluxe version and subsequent Nintendo Online expansions has kept the game fresh. But an entirely new game is needed at this point, and the exciting gameplay changes, including open-world mechanics, an expanded number of racers, and new items, only further add to the excitement for the game to drop.

2. Yakuza 0: Director’s Cut (Switch 2) – June 5

Typically, I would not put a remastered game in the top 5 most anticipated video game releases unless there were minimal other options. That said, Yakuza 0 is arguably the best entry in the entire Yakuza/Like a Dragon franchise, and the additional features make rediscovering this classic a must for Switch 2 players. Yakuza is known for some hilarious over-the-top dialogue, gameplay, and minigames that combine with a deeper and highly emotional storyline that fully engrosses players in the plot, and Yakuza 0 may have the deepest and most powerful one of all. Sega has been pushing its JRPG games out to the masses of late, and it is great to see this one get its due.

3. The Alters (PC, PS5, Xbox Series) – June 13

This science fiction adventure has an incredibly interesting premise. The Alters lands in the most anticipated video game releases list because of this feature. The main protagonist, Jan Dolski, will be tasked with going back into his past through his “alters”, which are defined by decisions he has made earlier in his life. You will have to use these alters to save his life while stranded on a deadly planet with a time limit until your death. It is a survival adventure, but it also gets at the core of human decisions. The novel concept is one that should touch many different gamers, regardless of the type of game that typically intrigues them.

4. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Splintered Fate (Xbox Series, Xbox One) – June 24

Technically, this one is not exactly a new entry, but it is newly coming to Xbox. For those who have not experienced this most anticipated video game release, it is essentially a mashup between Hades and TMNT. The roguelike experience is fun and action-packed. It was originally released on iOS in 2023, but has made its way to other platforms this year. When combined with Tactical Takedown and Mutants Unleashed, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles has had quite the year of popular releases.

5. Death Stranding 2: On the Beach (PS5) – June 26

Death Stranding 2: On the Beach is a long-awaited sequel to the post-apocalyptic delivery game. This final entry on the most anticipated video game releases list appears to improve on everything the original started as a foundation. The combat is improved, better utilizing a combination of stealth and action. The world map and travel, as well as the boss fights, also seem to have been improved. Otherwise, the premise is the same: deliver packages while avoiding bandits, cultists, and the undead. You will have to be quick and think on your feet to survive.

HM – A Pair of Intriguing JRPG Remasters:
Raidou Remastered: The Mystery of the Soulless Army, and Bravely Default: Flying Fairy HD Remaster

These two games get a quick highlight, only because they are two remasters that I am thoroughly excited to see play out, even if they do not officially make the most anticipated video game releases. They are getting some fairly important changes to graphics, quality of life, and gameplay, and hopefully, by going to Switch 2, these previously hidden gems get exposure and credit for the quality that they are.

Overall, June has some fantastic game releases, and hopefully, gamers can find a little something for every fan in their lives.
