This year, WOTC has decided to support the Extra Life charity by teaming up with Play-Doh to create the Magic: The Gathering x Play-Doh secret lair set to release from September 29th to November 9th. This set will be printed to demand, meaning that you will receive a set as long as you place your order within the order window. Non-foil will be selling for $39.99, and rainbow foil for $49.99.
Each set will come with 1x Greensleeves, Maro-Sorcerer, 1x Polyraptor, 1x Academy Manufactor, and 1x Wurmcoil Engine. If that’s not enough to get you interested, 50% of the proceeds will be going to the Extra Life charity, to help kids and families at the Seattle Children’s Hospital. It’s a wonderful charity, and one that WOTC and members of the community are eager to help support, as $2,60o,ooo has already been donated. Now, let’s take a look at the new cards.
It’s amazing what they’ve done with this set, with the Play-Doh giving so much depth to the scenery and action in the cart, but still retaining a sort of whimsy to it. Fantastically done, and not a bad card either. With Retreat to Coralhelm and Wight of the reliquary, you get a near infinite combo that pulls out all of the lands from your library onto the battlefield, giving you a beastly Greensleeves and an army of 3/3 badgers.
Incredible Play-Doh art for an Incredible card. Polyraptor is a massive pain to deal with. There are tons of two-card combos you can pull off with Polyraptor using cards like Where the Ancients tread, Goblin Bombardment, and Forerunner of the Empire that enable the player to have infinite ETB/LTB effects that let them infinitely generate tokens to create insane board states.
Oh, so we’re making tokens now? Another wonderful little Play-Doh card, this guy enables literally tons of three-card combos for Infinite Clue, Food, and Treasure tokens, infinite mill, infinite self mill, infinite damage, and infinite draw. The options for where to go with it are pretty much endless, but you can start by pairing it up with cards like Ghirapur Aether Grind and Magmatic Galleon, or Nuka-Cola Vending Machine and Arcbound Ravager to see how you like it.
This one may just be my favorite of the Play-Doh set; it really reminds me of the claymation sandworms from Beetlejuice. Just an amazing and creative work of art that’s 100% worthy of being in your collection. Of course, like the other cards in this set, it can also be combo’d into some nasty gameplay. Play it with Ashnod’s Altar and Nim Deathmantle, and you get infinite colorless mana and infinite 3/3 tokens with deathtouch or lifelink.
I am in love with this set, and I know I’ll be ordering both a foil and a non-foil edition once it’s finally up for sale on the Secret Lair website. If you can’t wait until the cards release and want to help a righteous cause, you can go to the Extra Life Website and make a donation right now to help kids and families in need, and catch a peek at what other things they’ll have available.
