Palworld Fishing Guide: Fishing Rods, Bait, and Tips

When Palworld added their Tides of Terraria update, it came with a BUNCH of new content for the game. One piece of that content was a feature that many players had been begging for, a fishing rod. Yep, a fishing rod so that they could catch the more aquatic dwelling pals within the game. However, one does not simply choose any body of water and toss out a lure.

No, no, no, did you believe a fishing rod would magically spawn for you to use at your leisure? Perish the thought! (Who brought the snob? kicks them off the keyboard)

But, yeah, if you want to go fishing, you’re going to have to craft the fishing rod yourself. And this guide will help you complete that little task!

Palworld Fishing Unlocked

Unlocking the fishing rod in Palworld is a bit difficult, but this guide is here to make it a teensy bit less difficult for your adventures.

There are three fishing kits in Palworld, and all three can be unlocked from the Technology menu as you gain certain levels.

Name Required Items Tech Level Tech Points
Beginner Fishing Set (Chillet)
  • Paldium Fragament x10
  • Pal Fluids x3
  • Ingots x8
  • Fiber x8
15 2
Intermediate Fishing Rod (Cattiva)
  • Paldium Fragment x30
  • High Quality Pal Oil x 10
  • Cement x10
  • Fiber x 30
29 2
Advanced Fishing Rod (Pengullet)
  • Paldium Fragment x70
  • High Quality Pal Oil  x20
  • Pal Metal Ingot x 15
  • Carbon Fiber x30
45 3

After you unlock these three, you can now start the crafting portion of the task! And good news is that you can craft them from any Production Line in your base (small mercies)!

How To Use The New Tech

Now that you have your new tech, we’re sure you’ll want to use it, right? Some good news is that when you unlock the Beginner Fishing Set, you’ll unlock Simple Bait at the same time! Yes, perfect! Unless you want more powerful Pals, then you’re going to need better bait. Have no fear, though, as there are some that you can unlock in the technology menu!

Here’s where they stand:

Name  Required Items Tech Level
Simple Bait
  • Pal Fluids x 2
  • Red Berries x4
  • Flour x 2
15 (Unlocked with Beginner Fishing Set)
High Quality Bait
  • Pal Fluids x 3
  • Tomato x 4
  • Flour x 3
22
Deluxe Bait
  • High Quality Pal Oil x 4
  • Onion x 4
  • Carrot x 3
  • Flour x 4
38
Alluring Bait
  • High Quality Pal Oil x 10
  • Cavern Mushroom x 1
  • Carrot x 3
  • Flour x 5
52

Thankfully, you can also craft bait on any Production Line in your base. Almost all baits are crafted in bundles of 10. Only Alluring Bait is crafted as a singular item, so collect ingredients accordingly if you want to make multiples of this type of bait!

Let’s Get Down To Fishy Business

Now that you’ve unlocked the fishing rod and crafted both it and your chosen bait, it’s time to GO FISHING! You can equip your new fishing rod in your weapon slot from your inventory menu, and once that’s done, let’s head to the nearest body of water!

Yep, you can fish on any body of water, and here’s the process! Once at your new fishing spot and you can see shadows of Pals swimming under it the it’s time to break out the rod and bait and try your hand at the mini-game. Here’s a helpful hint, though: if you’re having issues with finding the primo fishing spot, then you can head over to the Fisherman’s Point area, where intermediate-level Pals are just chilling near the docks!

Here are some key things to look out for when looking for spots:

  • Look for glowing shadows of Pals swimming under the water.
    • Use a flying Pal or search at night for easier sighting opportunities
  • Check the spot’s level while aiming
    • Advanced and Master level spots have rarer and higher-level Pals but are difficult to catch. Stick with intermediate and beginner spots until your confidence builds up!
      • Watch out for Alpha Pals while fishing. They can be spotted by their glowing shadows.

Well, you’ve thrown your lure! What’s next?

Sadly, like the irl activity, you’ll have to wait for a bite. Depending on the quality of your fishing rod and bait, your catches will be determined, and how fast you’ll catch them. Higher-quality bait makes the activity quicker, just FYI.

Catch the Big One

When you’ve caught something you see double exclamation marks above your lure, press the corresponding button to reel it in, LET THE FISHING GAME START!

From here, you’ll have to keep the fish within the bar until the gauge is full. If the fish leaves the bar, the gauge will slowly lose all that progress, and when it’s empty…(whispers) you’ve lost the ga–uh catch, you’ve lost your catch!

If you can fill up the gauge, you’ll be able to catch a new Pal friend, and all the materials that come with capturing it will be added to your inventory (if inventory is full, it will just fall on the ground around you, so clear it out before fishing!)

Another fun little piece of information for your player’s knowledge bank! A Fishing Rod is required if you’re planning on salvaging material from rubble in the open sea. Higher-level areas might be bubbling, so you can use a Fishing Magnet to collect rare items.
