PS Plus, PlayStation’s monthly subscription and online gaming service, offers a plethora of free and discounted games within the PlayStation store catalog. Besides the changing catalog, though, they also offer three to four free games to download each month for PlayStation 5 (and occasionally PlayStation 4 editions as well). While you can download the free games with any tier of PS Plus, you do need to higher, and more costly, tiers to access the larger libraries available. With June on the way and the games available for download from June 3 to the end of the month, let’s look at what is on the horizon.
PS Plus has been hit or miss with their game catalog, with many fans voicing their displeasure over the selections that have been offered. Also, although the games are technically free, given that the service itself is paid, and expensive at that, it is fair for gamers to want higher-quality games to be available. Still, if you are a subscriber to PS Plus, there is no reason not to download the games and at least keep them in your game library. For June, four games are being offered: NBA 2K25, Alone in the Dark, Bomb Rush Cyberpunk, and the expansion for Destiny 2 (although you do need to buy the base game if you do not already own it).
NBA 2K is pretty self-explanatory, as it is the latest game in the iconic 2K basketball simulating franchise, available for both PS4 and PS5. Also available for both PS4 and PS5 is an action-adventure platformer where players control a graffiti writer with a cyber head. Work your way through the new world and discover what connects Red between the human and graffiti world elements. Both games have the ability to be downloaded for either or both versions, and will be accessible from June 3 to June 30 on PS Plus through the PlayStation Store.
Alone in the Dark, meanwhile, is exclusive to PS5. As PlayStation Blog describes,
“Alone in the Dark is an atmospheric reimagining of 1992’s ground-breaking survival horror of the same name. In 1920s America, Emily Hartwood recruits private detective Edward Carnby to aid in the search for her missing uncle. Their hunt leads them to Derceto Manor, a home for the mentally fatigued in the gothic American South that hides a dark secret.
Play as either Edward or Emily as they explore Derceto and discover horrors that defy explanation. You’ll have to brave the shadows, solve environmental puzzles and survive chilling encounters with murderous creatures if you’re ever going to make it through this nightmare.”
The final PS Plus available game is not a full game, but rather an expansion. Destiny 2: The Final Shape can only be added to the base Destiny 2 game, which players must either buy or already have in their library. The expansion includes the “new story campaign, new Prismatic subclass, three new Supers, a new destination, and new weapons and armor to collect.” If players want the expansion but do not have the base game, it is available for purchase on the PlayStation Store.
PS Plus has not exactly offered fans what they are looking for all the time. Offering an expansion without the actual game is a slick attempt at a money grab, and 2K25 is a game that is about to be on the back burner with the end of the NBA season coming in the next couple of weeks. Alone in the Dark is a decent grab on paper, although its overall reception has been lukewarm at best. Bomb Rush Cyberpunk may be the most well-received of the group with a generally favorable rating, although it is also probably the least well-known.
Still, games are games, and they can still be enjoyable, regardless of the feelings about them as a package. If you have a PS Plus subscription, the Destiny 2 expansion is available May 30, while the other three become available from June 3 to June 30. Also, if you have not grabbed May’s PS Plus games yet, Ark: Survival Ascended, Balatro, and Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun can be added to your gaming library until June 2.
