Being the face of any organization is one of the most grueling jobs in the world. You face almost all the criticism and animosity. Since the release of Teamfight Tactics six years ago, Riot Mortdog has been the face of the game. He never shied away from the public eye, streaming as much as possible, posting updates on X, and delivering Patch Rundowns. Unfortunately, the animosity took its toll, and Mortdog is taking a step back.

Player and Fan Animosity too Great for Riot Mortdog

Over the six years of Teamfight Tactics, it seemed Riot Mortdog was impervious to the level of hate and animosity a face of a game can face. However, even the strongest wills can get broken if pushed too much. With Teamfight Tactics Patch 14.2, players and fans were not content with the balance of the Patch, citing it as one of the worst Patches in recent memory. That must have increased the pressure and animosity Mortdog received. While the criticism of the Patch is likely not the only reason for Mortdog taking a step back, it was the straw that broke the camel’s back.

On April 29, Riot Mortdog released an in-depth video discussing why specific changes were made in the upcoming 14.3 Patch, responding to feedback from one of the Teamfight Tactics professional players whom Mortdog did not name. At the end of an insightful video, Mortdog dropped the bombshell on everyone. For the foreseeable future, he will not be posting updates on X or delivering Patch Rundowns, and he will only stream specific games if he wants to.

The Aftermath

After the YouTube video was posted and the Teamfight Tactics community saw the news, many were upset but understood why. Mortdog was never required to do anything beyond helping his team create the best sets and balance possible. He did not have to stream, post updates on X, or make Patch Rundowns. The community has lost one of the most appealing parts of the game. Mortdog’s insights made the game better to play and watch.

While it is painful to see Mortdog step away, it is understandable that his mental health took a hit, and he needs to recover. Good luck, Riot Mortdog. We hope some time away will help you in the best ways, and we hope to see you back on Social Media soon, but not before you have recovered! Thank you for making Teamfight Tactics as good as it has been and delivering content we needed but did not deserve.
