Should You Play Beloved Hollow Knight Before Silksong?

I have a confession to make. I’m a huge lover of indie games, and I’ve never played Hollow Knight. I’ve had it wishlisted on Steam for a while now, but as of the writing of this article, I haven’t bought it. Why not? There are lots of reasons. I have a huge backlog of games in my Steam library. My budget is tight. I simply haven’t gotten around to buying it, even though a hand-drawn dark metroidvania looks like exactly my thing. Of course, with everyone talking about the upcoming Hollow Knight: Silksong, I’m wondering if I need to play the original game before playing Silksong.

Why Should You Play Hollow Knight?

It has an “Overwhelmingly Positive” rating on Steam, for one thing. It also has gorgeous hand-drawn art and vast exploration. Do you like your games difficult? If so, you’ll find a great challenge with Hollow Knight, but the controls are tight, and you can upgrade your character with different skills, so the challenge remains fair. It has a vast, immersive 2D world to slash and dash your way through. It sounds amazing! It looks beautiful! So why haven’t I played it? I should pick it up right now, but I haven’t even beaten Donkey Kong Bananza yet, so do I really want to start a new game now?

Do You Need to Play Hollow Knight Before Silksong?

Well, you don’t have to. No one will point a gun at your head and force you to play through Hollow Knight before you pick up Silksong. However, since Silksong directly picks up the story where the first game left off, you might be lost in terms of storytelling. IGN recommends playing through the first game before playing Silksong for several reasons. You can learn about the lead character, Hornet, you can familiarize yourself with the world’s lore, and it’s an all-around fantastic game.

But, if you choose to forgo the original game and go straight to Silksong, would you be as lost as you would if you, say, watched The Empire Strikes Back without watching A New Hope first? IGN says there probably won’t be too much of a problem. Silksong will take place in a new location, featuring many new characters. While we can’t know for certain, it looks like you can still play Silksong first without getting too lost.

So, What Am I Going To Do?

I like experiencing things in order, especially narrative-driven experiences. As such, I will likely play the original Hollow Knight first before even thinking about Silksong. I might even eventually review both games for my Weekly Indie Spotlight column. I look forward to experiencing what all the fuss is about. It’s on sale right now, so I might even pick it up soon, though I may not finish playing it for a little while. However, I believe that anyone who can’t wait to play Silksong can go ahead and play it without worrying about the first game. After all, Team Cherry wants to make an enjoyable experience for everyone, including those who haven’t played Hollow Knight.
