Well, the modders are at it again—and they’re doing some seriously impressive work with Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2. The game’s had a wildly positive reception since it launched last year, but this latest milestone might be the most exciting yet.
Thanks to one modder who goes by Warhammer Workshop—or Tom, as he’s known in the community—and the team behind the popular Astartes Overhaul, Space Marine 2 now supports 12-player co-op.
That’s right. Not six. Not eight. Twelve.
What started as a three-person co-op experience is now scaling into full-blown MMO raid party territory. New gameplay footage shows squads of players going up against a Tyranid Trygon Prime (yes, that name’s a mouthful), and the whole fight looks more like a Destiny 2 boss run than your standard Space Marine shootout.
And the best part? This isn’t some underground workaround. Saber Interactive, the game’s developer, is fully supporting the modding team.
Tom told IGN that even he was stunned:
“None of us expected 12-player PvE sessions to be possible this soon — but somehow, here we are.”
He credits Saber’s trust and openness with modding tools for making it all possible. Considering how locked down most studios are when it comes to modding access, this kind of support is rare—and honestly, refreshing.
The current build is still in testing—and no, the game isn’t balanced for this level of player chaos yet. But the team isn’t stopping with just a bigger player count. They’re already developing:
This isn’t just stretching boundaries. This is rewriting the whole battlefield.
The official Space Marine 2 modding Discord already has over 20,000 members, and it’s growing fast. This isn’t a niche side hobby anymore. It’s become a serious part of the game’s ecosystem. And Saber’s commitment to avoiding battle passes and loot box bait means the players—and modders—are free to build without restrictions.
Space Marine 2 was already a hit. But this modding community is turning it into something way bigger than anyone expected.
This 12-player breakthrough isn’t just a cool flex—it could be foundational for the future of the franchise. Space Marine 3 is already in development, and Saber’s early promise of “larger-scale battles” suddenly feels a lot more tangible.
So, is this the beginning of a new co-op era for the series? Maybe. And if this mod is anything to go by, we’re ready for it.
