Super Mario Galaxy is just like your usual Mario games, except it’s set in space. Both Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 are being released on Switch 2 on October 2. There is much anticipation, but some fans are feeling that the game looks “unfinished.” Nintendo is bundling these two games–and this isn’t good news for most fans. It is pricey at $70, which is another complaint. Compared to the previous release on the Wii, it appears to be much less detailed and doesn’t have as much of a 3-D look.
Super Mario is Nintendo’s most loved franchise. This particular game was originally launched on the Wii in 2007, with Super Mario Galaxy 2 being released the following year. They both earned massive acclaim. The game was then re-released on Switch as part of the limited-time 3D “All-Stars” collection.
It seems like the complaints on this game are mostly aesthetic. The excitement was high for this drop, especially since there is also a Super Mario Galaxy movie due to release in April of next year. But, after watching the trailer, some fans have been left disappointed.
One Reddit user named RedditRedditReddit64 showcased screenshots comparing the trailer with the game on the Wii. These comparisons show what could be texture downgrades. There were surfaces on the Wii that had diamond plate metal and soil that now appear to be just flat colors. RedditRedditReddit64 elaborated:
“I and others have noticed this weird inconsistency regarding the new ports’ textures, where some of them are a straight improvement in detail while others look completely washed out. I hope that these are simply unfinished textures that happened to slip through the videos and are awaiting replacements before release, but I have doubts.”
Some commentors on Reddit agreed, while others insist that the textures are unfinished and some write it off to video compression. Nintendo themselves, however, have not yet confirmed whether these are finished graphics or not.
