Survival Kids, the Inspiration for a Switch 2 Launch Title, is Available on Original Switch

Survival Kids is a Game Boy Color adventure game released in 1999. You take the role of a child shipwrecked on a desert island, and you must apply survival skills while searching for your lost father. The game was recently put on Nintendo Switch Online, meaning you can play the original game before the newest entry in the series is released on the Nintendo Switch 2.

The History of Survival Kids

Even though there’s a chance that many people hadn’t heard of it before it dropped on Nintendo Switch Online, Konami’s Survival Kids is actually the first game in a series. There was a sequel to the original Game Boy Color game, and then the franchise was renamed Lost In Blue for its DS and Wii entries. The franchise has been dormant since Lost in Blue 3 was released in 2008. The original game’s Nintendo Switch Online release means that the game is now more accessible, since physical copies are rare and a boxed copy can sell for around $430.

The New Survival Kids

The new game, also titled Survival Kids, will be released alongside the Nintendo Switch 2 on June 5. According to Nintendo’s original site, the game centers around four kids who find an ancient map and end up shipwrecked when following it. The new game will emphasize co-op for up to four players, both local and online. The site advertises that “Island vistas burst to life with vibrant toon-style visuals, a playful soundtrack, and charming sound effects. Paired with simple gameplay mechanics and accessible UI, it’s an experience sure to captivate players of all ages!” While the game does seem aimed primarily at younger players, it looks like it will capture the original’s charm and appeal to everyone.

Conclusion

Releasing the original Survival Kids on Nintendo Switch Online is a great way to get people excited about the new game. Since many people will flock first to Mario Kart World when they buy their Switch 2, the other launch titles might need a little boost of publicity. Letting people discover the original game might be just the boost that the new Survival Kids game needs.

Colts GM expresses regret on Anthony Richardson decision

The Indianapolis Colts wish they had made a different decision in 2023. The Colts selected Richardson with the No. 4 pick in the 2023 draft after the dual-threat quarterback had an incredible third season at Florida. He threw for 2,549 yards and 17 touchdowns and added 654 yards and nine touchdowns on the ground in his first season as a full-time starter. Given the momentum Richardson had at Florida in 2022 and with Indianapolis during OTAs, then-first-year head coach Shane Steichen named the former Gators quarterback the Colts' starter in the middle of preseason. Per Zak Keefer of The Athletic, Indianapolis general manager Chris Ballard has "regret" in not waiting to start Richardson until he was better adjusted to the league. "The regret is real, from both player and team," Keefer wrote. "Ballard wishes he’d resisted the urge to hand Richardson the job right away, a move late owner Jim Irsay pushed for at the time. What the young quarterback needed was the chance to acclimate to the NFL, to learn the job, to watch a veteran’s daily habits and build his own." “He just doesn’t know yet,” Ballard told The Athletic. “He didn’t have enough experience, both from a play standpoint but also a professional standpoint of how to get ready.” But, Ballard concedes, “when you take one high, there’s an expectation. The pressure to play the kid is real.” Richardson suffered a couple of injuries in his rookie season before his campaign ended in October when he had to have shoulder surgery. He also dealt with injuries and a brief benching in favor of veteran quarterback Joe Flacco in 2024. In his 15 games played in two seasons, Richardson has thrown for 2,391 yards, 11 touchdowns and 13 interceptions while adding 635 rushing yards and 10 rushing touchdowns. Before training camp this summer, the team declared Richardson and former New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones would compete for the starting job for 2025. Despite Richardson's status as a starter being unknown this year, Ballard isn't considering releasing or trading the 23-year-old quarterback. He thinks Richardson can be a starter by 2026. The tricky part now for the Colts is that they must unlock Richardson's talent while also encouraging the young quarterback. Frankly, it won't be good for his confidence if he gets beaten out by Jones in training camp. As the No. 4 pick in the draft, 2023 should have been the year for a real quarterback competition. Instead, a difficult situation has been created for the Colts and Richardson, and it serves as a lesson for overeager general managers and coaches.

Raiders staff 'changed their mind' on Jackson Powers-Johnson

Raiders staff 'changed their mind' on Jackson Powers-Johnson

First-year head coach Pete Carroll is tinkering with the Las Vegas Raiders' offensive line early in training camp. On Tuesday, second-year offensive lineman Jackson Powers-Johnson was moved to the second-team unit at center, with Jordan Meredith handling the first-team reps, per Tashan Reed of The Athletic. On Thursday, Powers-Johnson was moved to the first-team right guard. The Raiders initially wanted Powers-Johnson to play at center in the upcoming season, but "changed their mind" when they released veteran Andre James in March. "Powers-Johnson started games at guard last year, but the intent was for him to lock in on center after the team released Andre James this offseason," Reed wrote. "That was the case through OTAs, but the staff changed their mind once training camp got rolling. "According to coach Pete Carroll, the logic is Meredith is too small to play guard but holds up well at center. They signed Alex Cappa to start at right guard, but Powers-Johnson is a superior option there." Meredith, a six-foot-two, 300-pound athlete, is decidedly much smaller than the six-foot-three, 328-pound Powers-Johnson. Carroll believes the competition between Meredith and Powers-Johnson this summer will ultimately make the team better. "It's the heart of everything," Carroll told reporters on Thursday regarding the battle at center between Meredith and Powers-Johnson, via video from Taylor Rocha. "These guys are battling for their playing time... JPJ is working his tail off, and both those guys are battling, so it just makes us better." It's hard to see the Raiders benching Powers-Johnson if Meredith earns the starting center job. He should at least earn the starting right guard job after he made the PFWA All-Rookie Team in 2024. He is too talented not to start for Las Vegas.

Steelers Lose Two Defenders to Knee Injuries

Steelers Lose Two Defenders to Knee Injuries

The Pittsburgh Steelers have been hit with the injury bug as training camp is in full swing. The first major injury occurred with tight end D.J. Thomas Jones, who suffered a torn achilles and may be out for all of the coming season. Then, the injuries began to bunch up. Yesterday alone, the Steelers lost three players from the same position, with all of them suffering injuries in their knee on the same day. The Steelers will now, temporarily at least, be without the services of three defensive tackles due to knee injuries all suffered on Wednesday. According to head coach Mike Tomlin, the team lost three defensive tackles during practice. Dean Lowry, Jacob Slade, and Esezi Otomewo all suffered knee injuries and are being evaluated. The Steelers would go on to workout Cameron Young, a former fourth rounder in the 2023 NFL Draft by the Seattle Seahawks, in order to try to address the injuries. He has not signed at this point in time. With roughly two more weeks of training camp remaining, the Steelers will need to address their depth at the defensive line at some point. Whether that comes from free agents, tryouts or shifting positions of players is unclear, but it is clear that moves in some direction do have to be made. If the Steelers go into the season with this depth, or more realistically the lack of depth, the lengthy season is likely to cause issues for them down the stretch. It does, however, provide an opportunity for players like Yahya Black to shine, as the rookie draft pick should have an easier time climbing the depth chart now.

Reports: Yankees get closer David Bednar from Pirates

The New York Yankees are set to acquire right-handed closer David Bednar from the Pittsburgh Pirates, ESPN and the New York Post reported Thursday. The Pirates will receive three minor leaguers from New York: top catching prospect Rafael Flores, fellow catcher Edgleen Perez and outfielder Brian Sanchez, per the reports. Bednar, 30, is 2-5 with a 2.37 ERA and has 17 saves in 42 appearances for the Pirates this season. The two-time All-Star is 14-23 with a 3.23 ERA and 101 saves in 293 relief appearances over seven seasons with the San Diego Padres (2019-20) and Pirates (2021-25). The Yankees now have three relievers with closer experience in the bullpen with Bednar, Devin Williams and Luke Weaver. The Williams-Weaver duo has combined for 25 saves this season with Wiliams recording 17 of them. Flores, 24, is batting .279 with 16 home runs and 60 RBIs in 97 combined games at Double-A and Triple-A in the Yankees' system this season. The undrafted Orange County, Calif., native was in the Yankees organization for four seasons. Perez, 19, and Sanchez, 21, are playing at Single-A this season.
