Week 3, Day 1 of the LTA North Split 2 Playoffs. FLY vs C9. FLY is on Blue, C9 is on Red. FLY’s roster is Bwipo (top), Inspired (jungle), Quad (mid), Massu (bot), and Busio (support). C9’s roster is Thanatos (top), Blaber (jungle), Loki (mid), Zven (bot), and Vulcan(support). FLY won Games 1 and 2, C9 won Games 3 and 4. For more information on what Early, Mid, and Late Game means, see Terms at the bottom of the article.
The champions removed during the 1st ban phase were Jayce, Vi, Yone, Neeko, Rumble, and Sion.
FLY 1st picks Leona. C9 opts for Gnar and Sejuani as their 1st picks. FLY chooses Ziggs and Tristana next. Akali is grabbed by C9.
C9 directs their 2nd set of bans towards the Jungle as they remove Ivern and Lillia. FLY target the ADC pool, banning away Jhin and Miss Fortune.
C9 takes Zeri as they start up the champion select again. FLY closes out their team with Lee Sin and Gragas. C9 last picks Lulu. FLY’s comp is something we might have seen a few seasons ago, with strong engage and Turret taking power. C9’s team is more meta and has decent engage but is more outplay focused. Also, first Lee Sin I’ve seen in quite a while and I have to say, I don’t miss him.
Team comps are: FLY – Gragas (top), Lee Sin (jungle), Tristana (mid), Ziggs (bot), Leona (support) vs C9 – Gnar (top), Sejuani (jungle), Akali (mid), Zeri (bot), Lulu (support).
Bwipo and Thanatos trade a few blows in Top River before minions spawn but, otherwise, a boring start to the game. Oh look, another interview.
Blaber gets caught out in his own Blue Side Jungle. 4 members of FLY converge upon him. With Loki’s help, he manages to kill Inspired for 1st Blood before dying to Quad. Zven and Vulcan roam up from Bot Lane to try and look for a few kills of their own, only to fall to FLY. Vulcan dies to Massu while Zven falls to Quad. Loki exits stage left. Fight goes 3-1 for FLY.
FLY takes the Voidgrubs uncontested. In response, C9 takes the 1st Drake (Ocean) uncontested. This is a trade that FLY is probably happy to make sense their comp is all about taking Turrets quickly.
Thanatos and Bwipo get in a scuff in Top Lane but when Massu and Busio arrive to late, Thanatos has to burn his Flash just to make sure he doesn’t get jumped on.
Early Game ends with FLY ahead in gold by 900 but C9 ahead in farm.
Massu gets caught out in Mid Lane as Blaber hits him with a Glacial Prison. He dies to Zven.
Bwipo tries to get a little scrappy with Loki in Bot River, but he doesn’t know that Blaber and Vulcan are in the area. He gets locked down and dies to Loki. On the other side of the map, Quad takes the Outer Top Turret of C9 for 1st Turret of the game.
C9 starts up the 2nd Drake (Hextech). Inspired comes in to try and Steal it but isn’t able to. C9 secure the objective and get out.
Busio gets caught out in his Red Side Jungle by Blaber and his Glacial Prison. He has to Flash over the wall of Red Buff to survive.
As Inspired and Busio invade C9’s Red Side Jungle to Steal their Red Buff, Blaber and Vulcan come around the corner. Busio immediately jumps on to Vulcan. A fight breaks out as both teams converge. Blaber ends up securing the Buff with Smite. Both teams back off.
C9 starts up the 3rd Drake (Inferal) on spawn. FLY hover around, looking for an angle to contest, while also dropping Shelly in Mid Lane to do some work for them while they are busy at Dragon Pit.
Blaber attempts to engage on to Massu by Flashing on top of him but there is no follow up and he’s fine. Blaber then gets chunked low, dashes over the wall of Dragon Pit, and dies to Busio’s Ignite. Massu then drops Loki and Inspired secures the Drake.
C9, despite having higher Health Bars, starts to retreat. FLY chase a for a bit but don’t get any more kills. Fight goes 2-0 for FLY, who also secure the Drake and get 2 Turrets in Mid thanks to Shelly.
Mid Game ends with FLY ahead in gold by 3.2k and also ahead in farm.
After the successful fight for Drake, FLY moves down to Atakhan and takes it uncontested.
FLY takes the 4th Drake uncontested.
FLY starts up the Baron, hoping to bait in C9. They hover around but don’t attempt to contest so FLY backs off the objective. They don’t get the fight they were looking for, but they do make Thanatos waste his Teleport.
No full fights break out but there is a fair bit of skirmishing. Special shout out to Quad his deft footwork in avoid an almost point-blank Glacial Prison.
Inspired solo secures the 5th Drake uncontested. FLY is now on Soul Point.
FLY starts up Baron again in another attempt to lure in C9. This, however, they have a better set up and manage to catch out Zven by himself. He gets CCed by Bwipo, Ulted by Massu, dashes over the wall of his Red Buff, and then gets dropped by a Massu’s Q.
Thanatos then TPs in, right on top of several land mines. He gets taken to about half Health and immediately has to back off. C9 back off and FLY rotates over and secures Baron uncontested. To be fair, Blaber had no way in. Between the Ziggs, Tristana, Lee Sin, and Gragas, he wouldn’t have even gotten close.
Using Baron Buff, FLY takes the Base Mid Turret, Mid Inhibitor, Base Top Turret, and Top Inhibitor. They then back off, probably to go set up for the 6th Drake.
With some time before the Drake spawns, FLY marches up Bot Lane. As they start to take the Base Turret, C9 attempts to engage on them, only to get push back. As the Turret falls, FLY charges forward and starts racking up kills. Zven and Loki die to Quad, Vulcan drops to Inspired, and Thanatos falls to Massu (though he does take Quad with him). With only Blaber left alive, FLY ends the game.
FLY ends the game at 36:06 with a gold lead of 9.4k. The final score is 10-4 for FLY.
Not sure what else there is to say beside C9 got outplayed. FLY was able to take control of the map and with the power of Ziggs and Tristana just kept reducing and reducing C9’s sphere of influence and vision. This paid off towards the end when they were able to lay a trap and take out Zven, leading to Baron.
C9’s comp was very conventional, and they didn’t suffer to much from the fact that it was Game 5 of Fearless. However, FLY was able to use the fact that so many meta picks were still available to get champs that synergy well without having to worry too much about what C9 were going to pick. Basically, they used C9 penchance for comfort picks and their low champion pools against them.
This game does not remove C9 from the competition. They still have a chance to make it to the finals if they can beat the winner of the game between TL and SR. FLY, on the other hand, have secured their place in the finals.
