ego AI, a Combinator-backed company, just raised $6.7 million to build a breakthrough foundation model for AI behavior. Moreover, the company has released a whitepaper detailing their innovative approach and launched the innovative character.world. This new character engine is powered by a novel model that mixes small language models with reinforcement learning. But can flat, scripted video game characters finally become a thing of the past?

A Massive Ego Is a Good Thing in AI

If ego AI were asked, then it would answer with a defiant yes, as it’s introducing its Character Context Protocol, or CCP. With this open-source framework, AI characters can move between different games and digital platforms, while maintaining persistent personalities and memories. So, do these technologies actually set a new standard for believable AI? The company’s mission tackles the longstanding issue of robotic non-player characters head-on.

According to CEO Vishnu Hari, ego AI aims to create characters who act, react, and remember like real people, making digital worlds feel more alive. Top investors like Patron and Accel, with backing from notable angels including Balaji Srinivasan, have led this recent funding round. As a result, the training of their foundation model will be accelerated due to this capital, which will help grow their research team. Compared to other typical chatboxes, what exactly makes their approach to AI behavior so different?

The company’s technical whitepaper, “Behavior is All You Need,” outlines a model focused on personality, needs, emotion, and memory. Due to this approach, characters can be created that are autonomous and emotionally reactive. Furthermore, ego AI has open-sourced the CCP in an effort to democratize character development and encourage wide industry adoption. Given the lightweight interfaces that this protocol offers, developers can integrate persistent characters into existing games and apps with minimal setup.

Early versions have achieved rapid integration, and platforms like Unity and Roblox have already utilized it. So, how quickly will players notice a real difference in their games? The market’s strong response can be attributed to their Roblox experience, attracting over a million users in its first month. Interestingly, ego AI’s partnership with the popular Discord bot MEE6 has led to the rollout of AI-character games.

Notably, Patron’s investor Brian Cho stated that online communities can be engaged around the clock with the aid of persistent AI characters and their ability to remember conversations and build relationships. ego AI handles these intense computational demands through its partnership with the Singapore government and local universities for research and infrastructure support. Developers can check out the CCP specification now, with SDK access available via a waitlist.

Additionally, the company has launched a game called Accomplice on Discord and Steam. Companies like Meta and Riot selected a talented team to develop ego AI, which was founded in 2023. Moreover, they’re determined to power the future of digital interaction with characters that finally feel human. Who knows, maybe the platform will create a game that’s even a little less robotic than an average morning before coffee.
