Indiana Fever center Aliyah Boston wasn’t a fan of the officiating during their game against the Golden State Valkyries.
On Thursday, the Fever visited the Valkyries at their sold-out home floor at the Chase Center and absorbed a close 90-88 defeat.
But Boston pointed out how the referees affected her rhythm, especially in the first quarter, where she was whistled for two early fouls. In her postgame interview, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 WNBA Draft revealed her honest thoughts on the officiating.
“Yeah, I mean, I wasn’t even able to get into a flow,” Boston revealed. “I mean, I played the second half. I think it’s super hard to try and figure out and understand how the refs are calling it.”
That early foul trouble was a significant contributor to her frustration throughout the game, as Boston became cautious. Nevertheless, she was able to stay in the game, finishing with four fouls when the final buzzer sounded.
Despite those fouls, she still registered with 13 points, six boards, and four dimes in 22 minutes, which is in line with her season averages of 15.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and 2.7 assists.
The former South Carolina standout also didn’t shy away from throwing shade on both the referees. She also took a veiled shot at the Valkyries, who had seven more free-throw attempts than the Fever.
According to the 6-foot-5 center, Golden State did a good job of swaying the officials to blow their whistles at the right moments to fish fouls.
“I think it’s super hard to get charged fouls when I don’t think anyone’s in legal position,” Boston pointed out. “I mean, shout out to the Valks. They did a great job selling it and the refs bought it, to be honest. So good for them.”
Bosyon and the Fever are back in action on Saturday against the Portland Fire.
