The Atlanta Dream closed out the regular season with an 88-72 win over the Connecticut Sun on Wednesday. This marked Atlanta’s sixth straight victory as they inched closer towards securing the No. 2 seed heading into the WNBA playoffs.
Brittney Griner had one of her best performances in a Dream uniform on the final day of the regular season. The 10-time All-Star went off the bench to score a team-high 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting, four rebounds, an assist and four blocks in just 21 minutes off the bench.
It was an eye-catching outing for the 34-year-old, who turned back the clock to turn in a strong performance in a pivotal contest for the Dream. So much so that Atlanta sent a strong message to Griner shortly after the final buzzer.
“Great work tonight Brittney Griner! BG has officially passed Swin Cash for 16th on the All-Time rebounds list with 2,522,” the team posted on Instagram.
As the post indicated, Griner also made history on her big night by climbing the ranks in the WNBA’s all-time rebounding list.
The Dream will now be paying close attention to Thursday’s games. There are still a number of moving parts involved, but Atlanta will be facing either the Indiana Fever or the Golden State Valkyries in the opening round. The Dream will be the higher seed, which means they will host Games 1 and 3, if necessary.
Griner, who’s put up averages of 9.8 points on 51.8% shooting, 5.2 rebounds and 1.2 blocks per game in her first season with the Dream, is no longer the big-name superstar she once was. However, there’s no denying that Atlanta will need her to be at her best as they enter the playoffs with championship aspirations.
