It has been quite a ride for Brittney Griner this year in her first season with the Atlanta Dream. The 10-time All-Star parted ways with the Phoenix Mercury during the offseason and eventually signed with the Dream as a free agent on a one-year deal worth $214,466.

Throughout the season, Griner transitioned from being Atlanta’s starting center to playing a bench role with the second unit. In 38 games played for the Dream thus far, she’s put up career-low averages across the board with 9.6 points, 5.2 rebounds and 1.1 blocks in 20.8 minutes per contest.

Despite her reduced role in Atlanta, however, Griner has still been a pivotal piece for the squad. In fact, it would probably be safe to say that the Dream would not be fighting for the No. 2 seed heading into the playoffs had it not been for the 34-year-old’s contributions.

A testament to Griner’s sustained relevance is that she was able to make WNBA history on Wednesday, as the Dream took on the Connecticut Sun in a road matchup at Mohegan Sun Arena. With her first rebound of the evening, Griner was able to secure the No. 16 spot for most career rebounds in WNBA history.

Griner entered Wednesday’s game tied with Hall of Fame forward Swin Cash with 2,521 rebounds. The Dream center is now solo at 16th after breaking her tie with Cash.

This historic feat speaks volumes about Griner’s longevity and legacy in the league. She may no longer be the superstar she once was, but there’s no denying that the two-time Defensive Player of the Year still has a lot of gas left in the tank.

The Dream will need Griner to be at her best in the postseason as they compete for their first franchise championship this season.
