After taking home the championship in 2024, the New York Liberty lost in the first round of the WNBA playoffs to Nate Tibbetts' Phoenix Mercury — ending their postseason bid at three games.

Playing through an MCL strain, Liberty star Breanna Stewart led the way for her team with 30 points, nine rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocks. However it wasn't enough to overcome the duo of Alyssa Thomas and Satou Sabally, who combined for 43 points and 23 rebounds in the 79-73 win.

After the loss, Stewart was asked about the future of her coach in Brooklyn right in front of her face; and that led to the two-time MVP taking a reporter to task during NY's postgame press conference.

Stewie has her coach's back

Speaking to the media following a tough six-point defeat, Stewart and teammate Sabrina Ionescu were asked about the idea of Sandy Brondello potentially losing her job ahead of next season — despite leading the Liberty to two Eastern Conference championships and their first-ever WNBA title.

That resulted in a pretty tense exchange between Stewart and the reporter in-question (who quickly attempted to deflect that it wasn't her question), where the seven-time All-Star called out anyone thinking that Brondello wasn't the right woman for the job.

'What the [expletive]?'

"What the f—k," Stewart muttered to herself as she first fielded the question. To anybody that kind of questions Sandy being there, this is a resilient group. She has our back and we have hers."

"The way she continues to deal with the cards she was dealt was incredible," the three-time champ continued. "It wasn't easy for anybody, but she came in with a positive attitude and a mindset to put us in our best position possible and best foot forward."

"We're not going to be a team that points fingers. There's a lot of us that could've done better this season. But we're still going to fight and show up for each other every single day, and I think that's the most important part. We have Sandy's back."

The New York Liberty are 107-42 in the time since Brondello first took over in 2022. But an somewhat underwhelming 2025 marred by the injury bug unraveled what many thought could've been a back-to-back championship-winning season.

The core of Stewart, Ionescu and former MVP center Jonquel Jones are all expected to be back onboard next year. So it's hard to imagine the Liberty won't find themselves back in title contention in short order if everything goes according to plan.
