It didn't take long for controversy to surround this Saturday's season opener between the Chicago Sky and Indiana Fever.
There's a ton of hype surrounding the Fever's season opener against the Sky, and rightfully so. Not only are these teams loaded with star potential, fans get to witness Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese renew their rivalry.
A few days ago, Reese was asked about a comment she made during the 2024 season in regards to Clark's popularity. The reporter said, "Last year, you made a powerful statement saying the reason people are watching women's basketball was not just because of one player, but because of you, too."
Before the reporter could ask that question, Reese replied, "Next question." Several fans criticized her for shutting down the reporter, while others praised her for it.
Fast forward to this Saturday afternoon, and Reese's entire team is under fire for skipping the national anthem at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.
Dave Portnoy of Barstool Sports was first to report that Chicago's roster stayed in the tunnel for the national anthem.
"Chicago Sky didn’t come out for the anthem? Weird," Portnoy wrote on the platform formerly known as Twitter.
Judging by the reactions online, some WNBA fans aren't happy with this gesture from the Sky.
"Bush league move walking off the court during the National Anthem, then come back right after," one person said.
"They are un-American. That's why no one roots for them," another person declared.
Chicago's players have not yet been asked about this decision. It'll be interesting to hear what they have to say.
That being said, we don't want the Sky's national anthem decision to overshadow what should be an excellent season opener for the WNBA.
