DiJonai Carrington seemingly irked by Lynx announcer's playful jab

Lynx guard DiJonai Carrington seemingly wasn't pleased with a playful jab of a line from Minnesota play-by-play announcer Marney Gellner during Monday's win over the Dallas Wings.

In the second quarter at Target Center, Carrington lost a contact lens — something that has happened to her before. After locating it on the floor, she popped it back in, but seemed to still be trying to adjust it as play resumed.

"She's on the court, and I don't know if that contact is in or not, but Carrington's going to play," Gellner said.

She then immediately threw a pass several feet away from intended target Jessica Shepard for a turnover, which led to an amusing quip from the home announcer.

"And it must be out," Gellner said after the TO. "That contact must be out, because there was no teammate there."

Carrington wound up leaving the game in the second quarter with a shoulder injury, which head coach Cheryl Reeve later revealed was a subluxation (a partial dislocation). She didn't return, and her status for Thursday's game against the Aces is unclear.

After the game concluded, Carrington appeared to call out Gellner for the contacts line in a post on X/Twitter.

"Home announcers being shady is crazy work, can't lie," she wrote. "Anyways, pray for me y'all."

Prior to Carrington's tweet, Gellner's reaction on X suggested she didn't think there was anything malicious about the line.

Acquired from Dallas in a trade a month ago, Carrington has averaged 8.6 points and 1.2 steals in 16.6 minutes per game across 11 contests with the Lynx. The 2024 WNBA Most Improved Player and first team All-Defense selection should continue to play a significant role off the bench for Minnesota as the postseason approaches.

At 32-8, the Lynx have locked up the No. 1 seed in the WNBA playoffs. They have four regular season games left before the playoffs begin on Sept. 14.
