DiJonai Carrington Shares Heartfelt Message After Season-Ending Announcement

DiJonai Carrington’s first season with the Chicago Sky has not gone according to plan. After joining Chicago on a one-year deal in the offseason, the veteran forward was expected to contribute to a team looking to return to the playoffs. Instead, a foot injury delayed her debut for months.

Carrington missed the first 27 games of the season while recovering from a left foot sprain before finally making her Sky debut July 30 against the Connecticut Sun. She has appeared in only 11 games this season, averaging 8.8 points, 3.1 rebounds and 0.6 assists. Her performance was not enough to salvage the Sky’s season, and they were eliminated from the playoffs.

Carrington was not the only Sky player to battle injuries. Rickea Jackson suffered a torn ACL in May and was ruled out for the season, while Azurá Stevens and Courtney Vandersloot dealt with injuries of their own. Skylar Diggins also missed significant time with a right knee injury, and on Tuesday, the Sky announced that Diggins would miss the remainder of the season as she continues to recover.

Following the news, Carrington took to her Instagram Stories to share a message of encouragement:

“Sometimes I inspire myself, like girl you went through all that & kept going,” the post read.

Despite spending so little time on the court, Carrington’s year has been eventful. She was at the center of a heated incident with Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham in August, earning a Flagrant 2 and an ejection after making contact with Cunningham’s head.

The incident sparked plenty of discussion around the league and was followed by Carrington addressing the controversy on social media.

There was also off-court drama surrounding Carrington after she made public allegations involving her former relationship with Las Vegas Aces forward NaLyssa Smith.

Carrington will use the WNBA’s FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup break to get healthy and prepare for the final stretch. The Sky are scheduled to resume their season Sept. 17 against the Washington Mystics at Wintrust Arena.
