Part of the problem with getting started on a podcast as your own is that you will invariably find yourself in front of a microphone for at least an hour a week, and for Fever star Sophie Cunningham, there can be some ups and downs on that front. She is opinionated, and might step on some toes as she expresses those opinions.
She already offended folks in the industrial Midwest this year when she criticized the WNBA's decision to expand to Cleveland and Detroit rather than, say, Miami.
As she said, memorably, "Man, I don’t know how excited people are to be going to Detroit or (Cleveland).”
Cunningham later walked back those comments and, indeed, her original criticism was taken out of context. But still, she has established that is not always a favorite among fans in other cities.
We might yet add Las Vegas to that list. On her new podcast, "Show Me Something," Cunningham and co-host West Wilson were discussing Las Vegas, one of the most prominent and successful locales for WNBA basketball.
Said Cunningham: "I don't like Vegas. When people are like, 'Oh, Vegas!' I am like, 'Ah, (expletive).'"
She went on, "Every time that I am there, there's just that smell Vegas has and I have to wash everything. It's just like that smell."
Wilson pointed out that cigarettes smoking is allowed in most of Las Vegas, and that is generally the source of the city's stench. "I know. Yuck," Cunningham said.
Of course, there is more to Las Vegas than the city's Strip area. But Cunningham said she has not experienced that much: "Everyone who lives in Vegas and who lives off the Strip and in the suburbs, everyone says it's awesome. I just have never experienced that. So I am like, 'Ehhh.'"
