FIBA makes official announcement involving Caitlin Clark, Team USA

Caitlin Clark and Team USA will play their quarterfinals game of the FIBA World Cup on Thursday. The global basketball governing body made an official announcement involving the team and the Indiana Fever star on Tuesday.

The Americans swept the group phase with a 3-0 record. They started their campaign with a win over China before surviving Italy in a tightly-contested matchup. Team USA is coming off a 105-64 win on Monday over Czechia, bouncing back strong after it was almost upset by the European team.

Clark made history against China. She finished with 14 points and 11 assists, the most dimes by a USA player in the tournament in 28 years. However, she struggled versus Italy, recording just one point on 0-of-6 shooting. The three-time WNBA All-Star was back to her old self in the Czechia game as she finished with nine points and seven assists.

FIBA announces Caitlin Clark, Team USA’s quarterfinals opponent

Hungary defeated Japan on Tuesday to set up a quarterfinals showdown with Team USA. FIBA made it official by announcing the fixture on Instagram.

Head coach Kara Lawson will continue to rely on the entire roster as the tournament progresses. She has used all 12 players in the first three games. Breanna Stewart led the charge against Czechia, while Jackie Young scored a team-high 10 points in the matchup with Italy.

Team USA is seeking to win its fifth straight world championship. The Americans are the heavy favorites to win the title again this year, especially with their star-studded lineup. Napheesa Collier, Angel Reese, Jackie Young and Paige Bueckers have all been consistent contributors for the team.

Meanwhile, Clark and the Fever will return to action on Sept. 18. They will take on the Toronto Tempo in the first of their four remaining regular-season games. Indiana is fifth in the standings and battling with the Las Vegas Aces and Atlanta Dream for a top-three seed.
